Please note that access only means entry to the libraries and does not include borrowing.
The University of the Arts Libraries are open to the University of the Arts community: students, staff, and faculty with valid UArts IDs, and alumni with alumni IDs.
People not affiliated with the University of the Arts may enter the Greenfield or Music Libraries Monday through Friday between 9:00am and 5:00pm but may not borrow materials or use materials that require checkout. We highly recommend calling first and speaking to a librarian so your visit will be a useful one. You can search our catalog before you come to the library.
You must have appropriate identification, preferably a photo ID, and sign in at the Public Safety Desk located at the entrance of each building.
The Visual Resources Collection is not open to the public. Students must make appointments with Laura Grutzeck, Visual Resources Librarian, to use Visual Resources.
If you wish to use the University Libraries outside of the hours listed above, please call our Public Services Librarian, Sara MacDonald, at 215-717-6282 or send e-mail to SMacDonald@uarts.edu for the Greenfield Library. For the Music Library please contact Mark Germer, Music Librarian, at 215-717-6293 or send e-mail to MGermer@uarts.edu. Researchers with archival questions are encouraged to write a letter and provide as much information as they can about their question. Our postal mailing address can be found on our staff listing page.
RECIPROCAL ACCESS AND BORROWING
The University Libraries maintain reciprocal access and borrowing arrangements with Peirce College and with Moore College of Art and Design. If you are affiliated with these institutions please speak to your librarians there if you have questions. University of the Arts students, faculty and staff who wish to take advantage of this service must get a "patron in good standing" letter from the Greenfield or Music Library circulation desk each semester and take it with them to register at Peirce or Moore's library.
UArts community: Full-time matriculated UArts students and UArts faculty and full-time staff with valid UArts IDs who are in compliance with library policy (see renewal policy) are eligible to borrow materials from the Greenfield and Music Libraries. The semester sticker makes your ID valid.
Students and staff may carry up to $5.00 in overdue fines or fees before borrowing privileges are suspended. Any fees remaining at the end of the academic year will be sent to the University's Finance Office and added to the student's fall tuition bill. University library fines and fees are financial obligations to the university. All materials must be returned and fines or fees paid in order for students to receive diplomas or transcripts.
There is no limit on the number of materials that may be checked out except for materials such as videos, recordings, and reserve materials, and regularly circulating materials may be renewed for up to one year as long as the patron is in good standing. Materials MUST be returned after one year. Library materials are university property and should be taken seriously. Please see our tips for taking care of library materials. All materials must be returned or paid for and all fines must be paid in full in order for students to receive their diplomas or to receive transcripts.
SUMMER AND WINTER BREAK BORROWING FOR STUDENTS: Students enrolled in summer session courses must present their student ID with a valid summer sticker. In addition, students who:
may borrow library materials DURING the summer or winter break. Please show us your fall or spring schedule as proof of pre-registration. Please note that the normal borrowing periods and policies apply during the summer; you do not borrow materials for the entire summer but for the normal borrowing period (3 weeks, overnight, etc., depending on the item). Most materials borrowed over the winter break are due the first Friday of the new semester. Click here for more information about borrowing over the 2006-2007 winter break.
Library borrowing privileges are free for one full year after graduation; alumni borrowing cards may be purchased for $20.00/year thereafter.
Alumni patrons may not use interlibrary loan service or carry overdue fines. Any overdue fines incurred must be paid in full in order to borrow again or renew materials. Alumni may check out up to 10 items at one time and may have one renewal.
MEMBERS: People not affiliated with the University of the Arts but with arts-related research needs may apply to purchase a member's card for $50.00/year. In order for members to borrow, a Visa or MasterCard credit card receipt must be kept on file. Debit cards are not accepted in keeping with university policy. Member patrons may not use interlibrary loan service or carry overdue fines; all fines must be paid in full in order to borrow again or renew materials. Members may check out up to 10 items at one time and may have one renewal. For more information please contact Sara MacDonald, Public Services Librarian, at 215-717-6282, or send e-mail to SMacDonald@uarts.edu.
RECIPROCAL ACCESS and BORROWING: The University Libraries maintain reciprocal access and borrowing agreements with Peirce College, 1420 Pine Street, and with Moore College of Art and Design at 20th and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. If you are affiliated with these institutions and have questions, please speak to the librarians at your institution. Patrons who want to use this service must bring a "patron in good standing" letter from their library each semester and register with the appropriate library in order to borrow, and should always bring their valid school ID.

For course reserve borrowing periods please see the page on library course reserve materials.
Circulating books, scores and pictures may be renewed for up to one year by University of the Arts students, faculty and staff if no one else has requested them and if you have less than $5.00 in accumulated overdue fines on your record. After one year, materials must be returned or borrowing privileges will be suspended. This policy applies to ALL patrons, including faculty.
You may renew materials yourself through the catalog or you may call the Greenfield (215-717-6280) or Music (215-717-6292) Library. Please note that this does not apply to course reserve materials.
Books may be renewed by eligible patrons for up to one year.
Students may renew circulating videos, DVDs, and laserdiscs (i.e., those not on course reserve) twice. These items are one-day checkouts, thus the renewal period is one additional day per renewal. Students may renew slides once.
Alumni and member borrowers may renew materials once.
HOLDS: If an item is checked out, anyone eligible to borrow may place a hold on it. This prevents the patron who has it checked out from renewing it but does not affect the due date. When an item with a hold on it is returned, you will receive a notice that the item is ready for you in the respective library. You may place a hold on checked-out items yourself through the online catalog or you may ask library staff at the circulation desk to do so for you. Holds cannot be placed on items that are not checked out.
RECALLS: Anyone eligible to borrow may place a recall on a checked-out item. Recalls must be placed by library staff. Recalling an item alters the due date for the patron who currently has the item checked out. That patron will have 10 days from the date of the recall to continue using the item and return it by the new due date. If you receive a recall notice, please pay attention to it: the overdue fine for recalled items goes up to $1.00/day, up to a maximum accrual of $20.00 per item.
