As the Director of International Student Programs, I am looking forward to helping you have a successful and rewarding college experience. Our International Student/ESLI Orientation is designed to give you a smooth and enjoyable transition to your life in Philadelphia and at the University of the Arts.

Summer 2013 International Student ESLI Orientation   

Monday, June 24th - Friday, June 28th 

*All ESLI Students are REQUIRED to participate in ISO from June 24th – June 28th

 


 

Monday, June 24th: Arrival and Move-in

 

9:00 AM - 4:00 PM - REQUIRED

Please arrive anytime within these hours. The earlier you arrive, the more settled you will feel in your new home by the end of the day!

On-Campus Students: Please go directly to your dormitory assignment: FURNESS HALL, 1499 Pine Street (behind Hamilton Hall, Pine Street entrance to UArts) 

*An Orientation Leader will meet you at Furness Hall.  

Off-Campus Students: Please come to International Student Programs after settling in at your off-campus apartment. Gershman Hall, Room 412, 411 South Broad Street (on Broad Street between Pine and Lombard)

  • Check-in for Orientation: receive ISO packet with important updates and event locations
  • Get your student ID
  • Document Registration
  • Campus Tour
  • Banking, cell phone letter
  • Student Log-in

3:00 – 5:00 PM: Traditional Philly Italian “Hoagie” Supper/Dinner:

5:00 - 8:00 PM - Trolley Tour and Shopping Trip *Love Park, Clothespin

Tuesday, June 25th: MANDATORY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION


10:00 AM - 12:00 PM - REQUIRED:  Informational Breakfast Levitt Foyer, 3rd Floor Gershman Hall

  • Photography project and “Huggy Bear”
  • Introductions
  • F-1 Visa Regulations Discussion, Contract & Strategies for Adapting to life in Philadelphia and at UArts: Quiz game with Fabulous Prizes!
  • Introductions & Overview of The ESL Institute (ESLI) curriculum, Journal Assignment

12:30 – 3:30 PM - REQUIRED: PMA (Philadelphia Museum of Art)

Meet in Gershman Lobby at  12:15 pm

6:00 – 8:00 PM - Optional Dinner: More than Just Ice Cream

Wednesday, June26th: MANDATORY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ORIENTATION

3:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Bowling at Lucky Strike

Thursday, June 27th: MANDATORY ESLI ORIENTATION


10:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Testing Placement Conferences and Review of Assignments

12:30 PM – 3:00 PM - REQUIRED: The Barnes Museum

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM – REQUIRED: Chris Jazz Café

Friday, June 28th: Mandatory ESLI ORIENTATION


10:00 AM - 12:00 PM – REQUIRED:  Magic Garden Tour

 *Meet at Gershman Hall Lobby at 9:30 AM

12:00 PM – 1:30 PM – Lunch at Jim’s Steaks 400 South Street

2:00 PM – 5:00 PM – REQUIRED: Gershman Hall, Room 410 

  • Review photos with group, present projects
  • Homework assignment given
  • First Week Celebration with Cake and Ice Cream!

 



Fall 2013 International Student Orientation  

Monday August 26th-Wednesday, August 28th  

 

 New Student Orientation begins Thursday, August 29th (International Students should attend BOTH International Student Orientation and New Student Orientation)



MONDAY, AUGUST 26th

 

9:00am - 5:00pm:  Arrival and Move-In

**REQUIRED for all students living in the Residence Halls and ESLI students

**Recommended for all off-campus International Students

 

Off-Campus Students: Please arrive at Hamilton Hall 320 South Broad Street, Broad btwn Pine and Lombard. Orientation Leaders will welcome you, help you check-in and escort you to the International Student Programs Office.

 

On-Campus Students: Please arrive at your assigned Residence Hall. An International Student Orientation Leader will be there to accompany you to Hamilton Hall and the office of International Student Programs so that you can complete your check-in.

 

*Your ID will be ready if you have sent your photograph according to the instructions available here https://photoid.uarts.edu/.

If you were not able to send your photograph, we will order your ID


6:00 pm – 8:00 pm:  Dinner and Residence Hall Meeting

Location:  Jamaican Jerk Hut (15th and South)

**REQUIRED for all students living in the Residence Halls

**Recommended for all off-campus International Students


 

TUESDAY, AUGUST 27th


10:00am - 12:00pm:  International Breakfast REQUIRED

Location: Levitt Foyer, Gershman Hall, 3rd Floor

- Overview of F-1 Visa Regulations and Document Registration

- Strategies for Adapting to life in Philadelphia and at UArts

- Stories and advice by current international students

12:00 pm-1:00pm: Lunch

Terra Dining Hall, Terra Hall (on Broad between Locust and Walnut)

1:00pm - 5:00pm:  Trolley Tour of Philadelphia & Shopping Trip

Location:  Meet in Gershman Hall lobby by 12:45pm

6:00pm - 8:00pm: Evening Events: Baseball Game, Music Concert, Ice-Cream and Park, Movies



WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28th


**For parents of International Students:

10:00am - 12:00pm:  International Parents Brunch & Information Session

Location: Parc Restaurant (18th and Locust)

 

**For international students:

10:00am - 3:00pm:  English and Writing Proficiency Tests


**REQUIRED for most International students

10:00am - 12:00pm:  English Proficiency Test

Location: 415 Gershman Hall

12:00pm - 1:00pm:  Lunch

 Terra Dining Hall, Terra Hall (on Broad between Locust and Walnut)

1:00pm - 3:00pm:  Writing Test

6:00pm – 9:30pm:  Karaoke, Dance, and Dinner Party
