About Student Development & Activities

Mission
Student Development & Activities aims to promote a community that strives to help students achieve success inside and outside of the classroom and become socially responsible citizens. We meet with students, student organizations and their advisors to guide them in the planning and co-sponsoring of programs that will meet the needs of our student body while celebrating our diverse cultures. We encourage student leadership and social skills to advance personal responsibility and communication.

Goals
Student Development & Activities strives to help our students to become active citizens by:

  • Creating, developing and implementing programs for targeted population and situations that support and further diversity, empowerment and social justice.
  • Developing and implementing New Student Orientation to give new students the tools to pursue a successful transition to their academic, social, geographic surroundings.
  • Advising student organizations to ensure they promote their missions.
  • Developing and teaching Emerging Leaders course for selected freshmen and sophomores.
  • Developing resources for students, clubs and organizations, and University departments regarding all aspects of event planning, campus planning and policy interpretation.
  • Counseling students individually and in groups that range from time management, empowerment, conflict resolution, campus resources, goal-setting, time management, etc.
  • Working as part of a team in the planning and implementing of First Year Experience.

Program Decisions
Since the fall of 2008, Student Development & Activities program approval has been decided by the student staff in conjunction with the Director of Student Development & Activities. The goal of these meetings is to continue planning successful activities for UArts students and the entire UArts community. These Programming Meetings are open to all students. Meeting dates, times and locations will be posted on the Student Development & Activities door at Gershman Hall, Room 313.
