Full Steam Ahead!

Spring break was much needed, but now that it is over, I really have to buckle down for the end of the semester.  I have, however, beaten my addiction to 90s pop music, and have returned to my normal pattern of the social justice-infused, summer musical stylings of OAR and Dispatch.  I think the tipping point was when Pandora ran out of 90’s songs and started steaming early 2000s pop.  When Britney and JT broke up, her music really suffered.  I blame K-Fed.

Now that school is back in session, work continues on my latest project: a social sorority  for UArts!  My cohort Emily and I have recruited a little over 20 women and our numbers are only going up!  In the next few weeks, we will lead an interest meeting in order to zero in on the sorority that is right for us.  Unlike other schools, we have no Greek Life office, and no other nationally affiliated organizations, but I think this is to our advantage.  At other schools, rushing is largely dependent on things like legacy and reputation.  We are not slave to the connotations of “the loser” sorority or the “party girl” house.  Our obstacle, however, is combating the social stigmas of Greek Life that conflict with UArts ideals of independence and DIY drive.  I argue our desire to become a nationally affiliated organization is derived from that DIY drive because we are blazing this trail without the help of a Greek Council, or a previous example to follow.

It’s very easy to associate Greek Life with drunken debacles, but I argue that is a very small component of the culture that is commonly associated with the system, and a social moratorium other schools turn a blind eye to.  The overarching purpose of sororities and fraternities is to foster sisterhood and an appreciation for philanthropic causes.

Overall, I am very optimistic that our hard work will pay off.  Who knows, this time next year, I could have a ‘little!’

Photography - Concentration in Art Therapy ''15
Baltimore, Maryland

I am currently a Sophomore perusing a BFA in Photography with a concentration in Art Therapy.  I am from Baltimore, Maryland. Outside of class, I enjoy hanging out with friends, exploring the city, working out, and of course, taking pictures.

My favorite TV shows are Saturday Night Live, The Office, and Parks and Recreation.  I have watched almost all the episodes on Netflix.  Twice.  I live in an off-campus apartment with my roommate, Jill.  We have a blast but we hate  grocery shopping and doing laundry.

Check out my photo tumblr, I update it frequently!
