Rough Times

I'm not going to lie, this time of year is pretty awful. This week I have a large project due in Theater History. I have a Stage Combat mock test for my weapon certification test. I have homework in pretty much all of my classes, multiple rehearsals and next Monday are next season's Auditions. Obviously, it's all a bit nerve racking. But this is what this time in my life is supposed to be like. I'm standing at a crossroads and constantly under pressure, but this is when I really mature into a self-sufficient individual.

Ramping Up

April seems to have just shown up, and yet this month continues to fly by. Each week is flowing into the next, melding together all of my classes, just a consistent grinding day in and day out. I start my mornings around 8:30am and finish much later at night or early the next morning. Even though this is a brutal schedule to adhere to, I still find happiness from day to day in the fact that I'm totally immersing myself into my passion. When I lay down to go to bed every night, I can pass out knowing that I've worked my hardest that day.

Good Vibes

As I move furhter along in the semester I find myself in a very comfotable place. The weather has remained beautiful every day, I've gained a better work ethic and the days are flying by. Just the other day, I signed my lease to my new house and will be moving into it this weekend! The entire ordeal seemed to almost come out of the wood work and surprise me, but either way I'm beyond excited to start another chapter in my college life. It's one of those things that you do in your life that helps you realize that you're finally growing up.

Back To School

So it's the first week back from spring break here at UArts, and the weather has literally been phenomenal. It's been hovering around 70 degrees everyday with clear, sunny, blue skies. This has definitely kept my spirits up considering that we also returned to classes this week. Strangely enough, I found myself on Sunday night looking forward to getting back to classes the next day. And it was really nice on Monday, just to see all of my friends and teachers again and not to mention the infectious high spirits from the weather.

Closer and Closer

As I creep closer and closer to Spring Break, it gets harder and harder to keep focused in school. But I've realized theres an efficient way to make procrastination work for me. Whenever I find myself unfocused or feeling lazy, I just find a different way to approach the work so that I remain focused. This has helped me to refine the way I operate weekly. I've been able to make things fresh and interesting over and over again so that I always have a good work ethic weekly. It has definitely made these weeks fly by and now I'm only two weeks away from Spring Break!

Time Flies

I woke up this morning and looked at my calendar, noticing that I was already half-way through the week. It's amazing how fast time flies here once you really get into the semester. I'll go many days now feeling like a 4 class day flew by really fast, while some weekends where I'm not busy seem to lull. The constant routine week to week really helps to make the days fly by. I'm able to focus on my moment to moment learning in class, while also keeping a mindful eye on things that I have to get done after class.

Free Time Dwindling

With each new week, I find myself with less and less free time. It's almost as if each week something new gets added on. Whether its new homework, projects, crew assignments, etc. something new gets added onto my schedule. And even though it all piles up, i still have a level head heading into the more busy times of year. It's not anything that I haven't handled before, and I've handled worse. There's something about this time of the semester that really reminds me why I dedicate all of my time to this work and schooling as a whole.

End of the semester

As the semester comes to a close, I look back on the first half of my Sophomore year. My classes have been brutal but equally rewarding and my job as a tour guide has helped me to find an honest comfort at UArts. This is always my favorite part of the year, not just because of the long break, but also because of the feeling of accomplishment that accompanies me when I go back home. I've learned and matured quite a lot just in the first half of this year that I know after a good break at home I'll be ready and excited to jump back into school for the rest of the year.

Keeping focused

It's starting to get real chilly here in Philly. I've had to break out my heavy winter coat, gloves and hat already and its only November 7th. In the city it always seems like we sometimes skip over whole seasons. What with the Christmas ads already filling the TV and windows of shops, its hard to not get caught up in it. But if there's anything I've realized since coming to school, it'a that you have to live and function in the present. If I were to allow myself to get caught up in the winter excitement, then I'd be distracting myself from my commitments here and now.

Catching up with family

This week my dad came up for a day to see me. I'm originally from Massachusetts so it's not always easy for anyone from my home town to come and see me. When he came we went out to breakfast, went grocery shopping and for about three hours walked and drove around Philadelphia, just talking with each other. It was great to catch up with my dad and seeing him really reminded me of how much I miss my family and friends from home. It's coming to that point in the semester where everybody is just aching for a break and I look forward to Thanksgiving Break.

Acting '14
Halifax, MA

My name is Collin and I'm a sophomore acting major here at UArts. I have been acting since I was about nine years old and I love pursuing an education in something I'm really passionate about. Philadelphia is an amazing city and working for UArts has really given me a personal connection with this city and the university.
