Aline Smithson

Shadows and Stains

In a digital world, Shadows and Stains is the artist’s homage to traditional, old-fashioned analog photography and the creative possibilities of the photographic negative. In her own words: ”I want the shadows and stains of my photographic fingerprints as evidence that I was there, in a dark room.” These are nostalgic images, shot with a toy camera (the Diana) and then deconstructed in the printing process. Smithson embraces elements of chance and imperfection by printing from multiple negatives, adding text and textures, and painting prints with washes of oil paint. Smithson is represented by the Wallspace Gallery in Seattle, WA.
