Summer Institute : How to Apply

Admission Policy
Rising juniors and seniors in high school are welcome to apply as residential students, and rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors may apply as commuter students. Rising freshman are eligible for One-Week Commuter Intensives, which do not require an application.  

Application Process
Applications may be submitted either online or by mail.
Applications consist of a completed application form, a portfolio, writing sample, or audition (program requirements vary) + a non-refundable program deposit of $375 (due with all applications).  Note: program deposits will be refunded only if a student is denied admission to the program.

    Applicants applying through the online application must complete the application in one online session.  Please review the form and make sure that you have all the necessary information and materials available before you begin.  You will not be able to save your progress. Please note - $375 program deposit must be submitted by credit card if using the online application.
     
  • Applying by Mail
    › Download the SI 2017 Application Form
    Applicants applying by mail must include all required materials in their application packet.  Please double check that your application is complete before you mail it.  Applications will not be reviewed until they are complete.  The $375 program deposit may be submitted by credit card, check, or money order made payable to The University of the Arts when submitting your application by mail.

All Non-US Citizens and Non-US Permanent Residents: Complete and include this form with your SI 2017 Application Form.  If you are applying online, send the form to precollege@uarts.edu.

Art, Media + Design

Portfolio Requirements
Minimum of three pieces of work, completed in the last year, include title and media used. Students submit portfolios in person or as a URL to a digital portfolio (i.e Tumblr, Google Drive, Instagram handle, etc.). 

Note: Students without a portfolio should contact the UArts Pre-College office for alternative portfolio options.

Creative Writing

Writing Sample Guidelines
Writing Sample completed within the last year does not exceed three pages in length; written in one of the following genres: fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction or scriptwriting. Students who apply online must submit their Writing Sample as a PDF attachment.  Students who do not apply online must submit a hard copy of their Writing Sample.

Dance

Audition Requirements
Students may audition in person or submit an audition digitally as a URL to a website (i.e YouTube, Vimeo). 

  • Up to five minutes of a technical demonstration at the barre or center.
  • A two-minute solo piece. 

In-Person Audition Dates
Norfolk, VA - March 16-19 for participants of the Regional High School Dance Festival.
Madison, WI - March 23-26 for participants of the Regional High School Dance Festival.
Philadelphia, PA - Saturday, March 25 at The University of the Arts Open House.

Jazz + Contemporary Music

2. Audition

Audition Requirements
Students may audition in person or submit an audition digitally either on a flash drive or as a URL to a website (i.e Youtube, Vimeo).

  • Vocalists and horn players: select two jazz standards and perform the melody and improvise.
  • Bass players: select two jazz standards and play the melody, a bass line, and solo.
  • Piano and guitar: select two jazz standards and play the melody, chords, and solo.
  • Drummers: select two jazz standards and demonstrate a swing feel, playing with a play along or other musicians. Drummers should also trade four bar solos through the form of the song.

  • An introduction: Including first and last name, theater experience and response to the following questions:
    - Why did you choose this program?
    - What would you like to take away from your experience in this program? 
  • Two of the following, not to exceed four minutes:
     - Comedic piece
     - Dramatic piece
    - 16 bars of music

 Other Expenses 

Supplies: Students are required to bring art supplies with them or purchase them once they arrive on campus. Supply lists will be available on the website one month prior to the start of the program with an estimation cost.   

Spending + Miscellaneous Expenses: Students spend an average of $80-$100 per week on additional items including laundry, snacks, personal spending and non-required supplies.
