Why UArts?
“I received a letter about the screenwriting program…the program seemed really devoted and focused and it was. We started writing freshman year.”

Tell me about your internship with FEARnet.
“FEARnet is a video on demand mobile channel and a website – a multiplatform horror channel. It started one year ago on Halloween. I post news everyday about horror-related breaking news and write reviews for the website about books, comics, DVDs.”

How did you get the internship?
“I got the internship because one of FEARnet’s staff members graduated from UArts’ WFT program and asked [program director] Jeff Ryder to recommend someone. Jeff recommended me because of my interest in horror.”

What’s the coolest experience you’ve had as an intern?
Giaco and another intern came up with an idea to broadcast a fresh one-minute long video each day on FEARnet.com. “They liked the idea so much they flew us out to L.A. for two days to oversee the production, so we were sort of executive producers. It was out of this world,” Giaco said. The videos offer horror buffs creative tips: How can you make a mummy costume more authentic? The trick is to soak gauze bandages in tea, Giaco says.

How can I find your writing on FEARnet.com?
“Go to www.fearnet.com and click on News & Reviews – look for ‘By Giaco.’ ”

Can a horror movie have a happy ending?
“Mine always do.”

What’s your favorite horror movie?
“I won’t mention some that are simply ‘too’ gory, but I liked 28 Days Later. It was all about the characters. It put interesting characters in a really tough setting and that’s what I’m trying to do with my movies.”

Last year I wrote a full-length screenplay about a zombie. That experience was totally eye-opening to me. It took the full year to break it down story-wise and structure-wise.” - Giaco Furino, Senior, Writing for Film and TV
