Graduate Visual Art & Design Portfolio Requirements

MFA Book Arts/Printmaking
Applicants should submit a portfolio of 20-30 digital images. These should represent the applicant’s full range of studio experience, preferably including printmaking and book arts. Images must be clearly identified and must be accompanied by an inventory list giving title (or other identification), size, medium, and date of completion. If return of the portfolio is desired, a self-addressed, stamped envelope must be included. Applicants are also encouraged to submit selected original work. Original work should be mailed directly to the director of the program (Susan Viguers, MFA Book Arts/Printmaking) or dropped off at the time of the interview. Self-addressed, stamped packaging for return of original work must be provided. To make an appointment for an interview, email Susan Viguers. (svigures@uarts.edu)  

Master of Arts in Museum Communication
Applicants should submit a writing sample that demonstrates clarity of expression, creative thought, and, if appropriate, organized research. In addition, they should submit examples of work that relate to their professional interests, including but not limited to, press releases, brochures, grant applications, samples of database work, exhibitions, or programs. The materials may be submitted on paper or CD. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of materials.  

Master of Arts in Museum Education
Applicants should submit examples of academic and professional writing as printed copy, published materials, or CD. Examples might include papers written at the college or university level; educational materials written for museums; lesson plans written for museums or schools. Applicants who are artists may submit slides or a CD of their work. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of materials.  

MFA Museum Exhibition Planning & Design
Applicants are requested to submit a digital portfolio of their work preferably a disk with a well-organized slide show indicating their professional experience in the areas of art or design. If the applicant does not have a design or fine art background, other related experience will suffice, such as gallery installations, renovations, video/film, theater, etc. and/or writing samples. Writing samples in the professional realm preferred i.e. an exhibition catalog, label text, marketing materials, teaching plan, educational programs, press release, or grant proposal, to name a few. Major papers or thesis will suffice if only academic papers are available.  

Master of Arts in Art Education & Master of Art in Teaching Visual Arts
Applicants should submit 10 to 20 slides , or other visual evidence representing studio experience.  

MFA Low Residence Programs in Ceramics, Painting or Sculpture
Applicants should submit a digital portfolio of 20 jpeg images that represent the recent direction of the work as well as the full range of experience in the discipline to which application is being made. Jpeg images should be low resolution (72dpi). Please title the image on the disk by slide number, followed by the name of the piece. Slides should be numbered from 01 – 20 (ex: 01 Untitled, 02 Titled, etc.) and include an inventory list indicating the image number, title, size, medium, date of completion, as well as a description if needed. Original work should not be mailed to the Admission Office. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of materials. Applicants should note the low residency programs are year-round and require three annual eight week, on-campus summer residences as well as off-campus independent study during the Fall and Spring semesters. These programs extend over two and a half years culminating in a thesis exhibition following completion of the third Fall semester. New students begin in June only.  

Master of Industrial Design
Applicants should submit a preliminary statement of objectives and a detailed description of career experience. Nonvisual evidence of research and professional ability should be included in the portfolio. Applicants may submit digital portfolios in lieu of, or in addition to color slides
