PHILADELPHIA (May 8, 2008) – At about 11:30 a.m. today, fire broke out in the metal foundry at The University of the Arts. The foundry is a small concrete studio adjacent to the University’s Furness Residence Hall at the corner of 15th and Pine Streets. The blaze was contained to the studio, which was destroyed. There were no injuries.
The fire began when wax used in the process of casting metal sculptures overheated beneath a kiln and caught fire. The only individual in the studio at the time was the shop supervisor, and he escaped unharmed.
Students were evacuated from Furness Hall as a precaution, but the building was not damaged and residents were allowed back in at approximately 12:45 p.m.
