Women Pop Artists Exhibition Receives News Coverage
"Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists 1958 – 1968," the University's major exhibition running through March 15 in the Rosenwald-Wolf, Hamilton and Borowsky galleries, has received glowing coverage in both the mainstream news media and the blogosphere. The Philadelphia Inquirer ran a lengthy feature story on the exhibition, referring to it as "one of the most fascinating revisions of an art movement that Philadelphia - or any major city for that matter - has seen." The Inquirer also listed the exhibition in its "Spring Arts Preview," calling it "one of the more intriguing exhibitions of this half season." The Associated Press also covered the exhibition and wrote a feature story, which was picked up by ABCNews.com, ArtDaily.com and a number of arts-related blogs.

New Funding Opportunities for Students
The University's Student Financial Services office has received new funding opportunities for students: The Viriva Community Credit Union Scholarship, National Federation of the Blind 2010 Scholarship, Casey Family Graduate Scholarship, Casey Family (Undergraduate) Scholarship and Foster Care to Success Scholarship. These and other new opportunities are posted to the University's online Scholarship Bulletin Board. Additional information can also be found on the scholarship bulletin board outside of the Student Financial Services office on the second floor of Hamilton Hall. Students applying for scholarships and/or grants who would like help compiling materials, organizing applications or editing essays should contact Amanda Black, Associate Director of Student Financial Services, at 215-717-6137.

Faculty Grant Funding Information Session
The University-sponsored Philadelphia Applied Research Lab (PARLab) is hosting an information session about funding opportunities for faculty. PARlab creates opportunities for faculty to further their research-based work by providing funding for projects that connect academic and professional communities. PARlab supports faculty presenting in academic and professional realms and applying to additional funding sources. The grant application deadline has been extended to February 1. Animation Seniors Work on Animal Collective Music Video
Animation seniors Scott Newcomb and Joe Pollack served as the lead animators on the Animal Collective video for the song "Brother Sport." Rolling Stone called the video, which is approaching 100,000 hits on YouTube, "a kaleidoscopic odyssey, featuring psychedelic animations ..."

Alumnus' Animation Makes Best of Ottawa 2009 Touring Show
"Mak the Horny Mac Daddy," a one-minute, seven-second film by former animation student Ian Miller, is one of 15 films to be included in the Best of Ottawa 2009, a traveling showcases of the outstanding films presented in the Ottawa Animation Film Festival. In October, Miller became the first University of the Arts student to have work screened at the festival. "Mak" was recognized with an honorable mention in the best undergraduate animation category for its "uninhibited expressiveness."

Donation Yoga Class for the Benefit of Haiti
Yoga instructor Dawn Reid, a staffer in the College of Performing Arts dean's office, is teaching a donation yoga class on behalf of the Yogis for Haiti program. All proceeds will be given to Partners in Health (PIH), a community-based health care provider that works with the underprivileged in developing countries, including Haiti. PIH has people on the ground in Haiti and can utilize donations for near-term relief work and long-term support of health care needs in Haiti and other developing nations. One of the largest non-governmental health care providers in the country, PIH has received large grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is recommended by GiveWell and UPenn's Center for High Impact Philanthropy. Suggested donation is $5, but anything is appreciated.

Paradigm Lecture Series: Jean Miele
Photographer Jean Miele will deliver the lecture "Help from a Friend – Thoughts on Synchronicity, Coincidence and Inspiration" as part of the Paradigm lecture series, sponsored by the Media Arts department. Miele is exhibiting "The Vintage Series: Scientific Inquiries," in the Sol Mednick Gallery through February 5. Future lectures include photographers Connie Imboden, Gary Leib, a screening of the Black Maria Film Festival, photo editor and alumna Susan Welchman ('70), and filmmakers Alan Berliner and Fred Worden.

Brind School Presents 'The Averageachievers Club'
Kate Galvin, casting director at the Walnut Street Theater and one of the authors of the recent West End hit "Austentatious," directs this satirical look at the academic pressures faced by high school students and the desperate measures students will resort to in pursuit of their dreams. Book and lyrics by Jonathan Karpinos; music by Benji Goldsmith. The production kicks off the Brind School's Platform Series of concert-style performances and readings. $5 suggested donation. Complimentary admission for the University community and children (9–14). Tickets are available online.

Women and Pop Art Symposium
The University presents Women and Pop Art, a symposium organized in conjunction with the University's "Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists 1958-1968" exhibition, the first focused exclusively on women Pop artists. The two-day symposium features several of the artists, along with prominent art historians. University Liberal Art Professor Nancy Heller is among the presenters and will speak about "Humor in Pop Art." Both the symposium and the exhibition aim to redefine the legacy of these extraordinary and long-overlooked artists. For more information, call 215-717-6480.

Taubman Approach Workshop
The University and Golandsky Institute present a workshop on the Taubman Approach to music-making. This method liberates pianists to play unburdened by physical restrictions. Based on principles of natural alignment and coordinated movement, the Taubman Approach gives musicians the tools to overcome technical limitations and play effortlessly. It has proven to be highly effective in the prevention and cure of fatigue, pain and injury. As a result, virtuosity, phrasing, tone production, dynamics and many other valued skills emerge, uniting artist, instrument and music. Over a dozen arts and cultural institutions (including Washington National Opera, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and Arena Stage) will convene to meet those interested in internships in arts management, graphic design, media relations, production, community outreach, and in technical and artistic fields. 'Vulnerable Invincibility,' Danielle Picard-Sheehan
Picard-Sheehan's images document her children's dreams, vulnerabilities and fears, while evoking universal themes of birth, religion and spirituality. She utilizes the Ambrotype, a historic photographic process from the turn of the 20th century that creates a positive photographic image on a sheet of glass using a wet plate process for the negative, a perfect match for her dream-like images. Reception: January 28, 5 – 7 p.m. at the Sol Mednick Gallery.
