Study Abroad Funding Opportunities for Students: Deadline February 1
The University's Student Financial Services office encourages students interested in funding for studying abroad to review the Edna Andrade College of Art & Design Scholarship, Richard C. von Hess Travel Fellowship & Scholarship, and Sol Calvin Cohen Memorial Award posted to the University's online Scholarship Bulletin Board. These generous funding opportunities are only available to University of the Arts students and have a February 1 deadline. Additional information including new funding opportunities from The John Gyles Education Awards, The Army Emergency Relief's MG James Ursano Scholarship, and The USA Funds Access to Education Scholarship can be found on the scholarship bulletin board outside of the Student Financial Services Office on the second floor of Hamilton Hall. Students applying for scholarships and/or grants who would like help compiling materials, organizing applications or editing essays should contact Amanda Black, Associate Director of Student Financial Services, at 215-717-6137.

University Alumna, Faculty Members Choreograph, Compose for Annenberg Center Performances
Monique Haley '01 (Dance) makes her choreographic debut at the kickoff of the Dance Celebration series at Penn's Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts this week with the River North Chicago Dance Company. Her number, "Uhuru" (2009), is a full-company work whose name means "freedom" in Swahili. "Uhuru" is set to the music of Akoya Afrobeat. School of Music faculty member Evan Solot set the music for the company's performance of "Forbidden Boundaries" (2009), another full company work. Known for its jazzy, sizzling, theatrical style, River North Chicago Dance Company brings to the stage "energetic, marvelously trained performers and a gutsy, entertaining repertoire," according to the Chicago Sun Times. Brind School Faculty Member Cast in Off-Broadway Show
Brind School faculty member and Barrymore Award winner Forrest McClendon has been cast in "The Scottsboro Boys" at Vineyard Theater in New York City, according to Playbill.com. The show explores the Scottsboro case of the 1930s in which a group of young African-American teenagers were unjustly accused of attacking two women. Tony Award winner Susan Stroman directs this world premiere. Opens March 10.

University and PHILADANCO Co-Host 22nd Annual International Association of Blacks in Dance Conference
Hundreds of dancers, teachers, choreographers, presenters, historians, videographers and students from North and South America, Europe, Australia, Africa and the Caribbean will convene on campus January 14–17 for the 22nd International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) Conference, co-hosted by the University and Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO). This year's conference, "Back to Basics," features master classes, panels and seminars, and hosts multi-company auditions and prestigious national summer intensives (Jacob's Pillow, American Dance Festival, Disney and Bates, among others) seeking talent and participants for their programs. The Merriam Theater will host three days of showcase performances by 30 dance groups, including Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Duke Ellington School of the Arts (Washington, D.C.), Cleveland School of the Arts, Forces of Nature, College of William & Mary, Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, Las Vegas Contemporary Dance Theater, Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn, Camille A. Brown, Urban Bush Women, and Ailey II, among others. The University’s School of Dance ensemble will perform an excerpt of "Forces of Rhythm" by world renowned choreographer Louis Johnson. All members of the University community receive complimentary admission to the showcase performances with a valid ID. Check out the schedule of events.

Staff Council Events
All staff members are invited to two upcoming Staff Council-sponsored events. The annual Welcome Back Coffee Break is Friday, January 15, from 9–11 a.m. in the Gershman Hall Chapel. Tickets are available for the Philadelphia 76ers vs. the Dallas Mavericks at the Wachovia Center on Friday, January 22 at 7 p.m. Forty first-come, first-served cash-only tickets are available for $15 from Brian Feeney at 215-717-6062.

Multimedia Gallery Reception and Artist Talk with Brian Knep
Brian Knep is a new media artist who uses science and technology to explore change, healing, struggle and acceptance. Often his works are dynamic and respond to changes in their environment. Some are simply aware of the passage of time while others are interactive, sensing and reacting to the people around them. Knep will show three pieces, "Flower Umbilicus," "Drip Ticker" and "Drift Grid" in the Multimedia Gallery through March 4.

3rd Annual Internship Fair for the Arts
The Washington, D.C., arts and culture community is collaborating to stage the 3rd annual Internship Fair in the Arts. Over a dozen arts and cultural institutions (including Washington National Opera, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and Arena Stage) will convene to meet those interested in internships in arts management, graphic design, media relations, production, community outreach, and in technical and artistic fields. ROSENWALD-WOLF GALLERY (Anderson Hall)
'Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958 – 1968'
The first exhibition of female Pop artists takes aim at more accurately reflecting the depth of women's contributions to Pop Art. "Seductive Subversion" features Marisol's "John Wayne" sculpture; "Black Rosy," an eight-foot-tall "Nana" sculpture by French sculptor, painter and filmmaker Niki de Saint Phalle; Rosalyn Drexler's oil and acrylic works "Chubby Checker" and "Home Movies"; Chryssa's Times Square-inspired "Ampersand," a multi-layered stylized and illuminated neon ampersand in a Plexiglas cube; and a 17-foot-long triptych by Idelle Weber. Paintings and sculptures by Faith Ringgold, Pauline Boty, Vija Celmins, Dorothy Grebenak, Jann Haworth, Kay Kurt, Yayoi Kusama, Lee Lozano, Mara McAfee, Barbro Ostlihn, Martha Rosler, Marjorie Strider, Alina Szapocznikow and Joyce Wieland are also featured in the show. Also at the Hamilton Hall Galleries and Borowsky Gallery in Gershman Hall.

'Vulnerable Invincibility,' Danielle Picard-Sheehan
Picard-Sheehan's images document her children's dreams, vulnerabilities and fears, while evoking universal themes of birth, religion and spirituality. She utilizes the Ambrotype, a historic photographic process from the turn of the 20th century that creates a positive photographic image on a sheet of glass using a wet plate process for the negative, a perfect match for her dream-like images. Reception: January 28, 5 – 7 p.m. at the Sol Mednick Gallery.
