NEWS
Multimedia Faculty Member Jeremy Beaudry Serves as Curator of Manifesta 8, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art
University Multimedia Assistant Professor Jeremy Beaudry is serving as an associate curator for Manifesta 8, the European Biennial of Contemporary Art. Manifesta aims to experiment with innovative curatorial models and did not consider any individual art professionals for curator, forming three curatorial teams. Beaudry and Bassam El Baroni, artistic manager of Egypt's Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum (ACAF), form one of those curatorial collectives assembling the show. Chamber of Secrets, an arts collaborative based in Denmark and the Middle East, and tranzit.org, a network of autonomous art associations throughout eastern Europe, complete the curatorial triumvirate. Beaudry and El Baroni gave a presentation recently to the University community about their experience and curatorial methodology, as well as the history of the Manifesta Biennial. Beaudry served as an artist-in-residence at the ACAF in January 2008 for "Cleotronica," a festival for media, art and socio-culture. Manifesta 8, which has changed its artistic parameters and geographic locations every two years since it launched in 1996, opens in the Murcia region of Spain on October 1, 2010.
Current MAT Student/Alumna's Film Honored with Prestigious Nomination
Current MAT student and 2008 Sculpture graduate Jennifer Lynn Welsh stars in the independent film "The New Year Parade," which recently received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards' John Cassavetes prize – given to the best feature made for under $500,000. Chosen for the role from over 2,000 high school auditioners, Welsh portrays Kat McMonogul and won the best supporting actress award at the BendFilm Festival. Directed by Tom Quinn, the film follows brother and sister Jack and Kat McMonogul over the course of a year as their parents separate, struggle with their decisions, and eventually divorce. Following strong theatrical runs in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and other markets, and award recognition at Slamdance 2008, Philadelphia Film Festival and Indie Memphis Film Festival, Carnivalesque has released the movie, making it available for purchase at Amazon.com, Target, Best Buy, and Barnes and Nobles, and for rent on Netflix.com and blockbuster.com. The Independent Spirit Awards will be handed out March 5, the same weekend as the Oscars.
