Registration for Spring semester 2010 classes closes THIS WEDNESDAY, November 25, 2009 at 5 p.m. If you have not yet registered, please log on to the University's Portal to register or visit the Office of the Registrar on the second floor of Hamilton Hall, Room 230, to register in person, prior to the deadline.

Register for 'Road Trips to the Real World'
This is your chance to visit employers over Winter Break and learn about interesting career opportunities. The Career Services Office and the Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers (EACE) invite you to several exciting site visits to meet with and learn from employers at their places of work. Some sites of specific interest to University of the Arts students include:

  • Citizen's Bank Park (Philadelphia) - Thursday, Jan. 7
  • City Year (Philadelphia) - Thursday, Jan. 7
  • New England Aquarium (Boston) - Wednesday, Jan. 13
  • Penguin Putnum (New York) - Wednesday, Jan. 13
  • Philadelphia Zoo (Philadelphia) - Tuesday, Jan. 5
  • WHYY (Philadelphia) - Thursday, Jan. 7

You must register in advance to participate in these site visits. Registration begins Tuesday, December 1 at 10 a.m. Spots fill fast! There is a fee of $5 per site and you are responsible for your own transportation. Questions? Contact Career Services at 215-717-6075.

New Funding Opportunities for Students
The University's Student Financial Services office has received new funding opportunities for students: The Hispanic Scholarship and the Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship. These and other new opportunities are posted to the University's online Scholarship Bulletin Board. Additional information can also be found on the scholarship bulletin board outside of the Student Financial Services Office on the second floor of Hamilton Hall. Students applying for scholarships and/or grants who would like help compiling materials, organizing applications or editing essays should contact Amanda Black, Associate Director of Student Financial Services, at 215-717-6137.

Staff Council, Philabundance Partner for Campus Food Drive
Staff Council is partnering with Philabundance for a holiday food drive to benetfit needy families in Philadelphia. Donation boxes will be at the entryways of the Merriam Theater, Juniper Street residence hall, and Gershman, Hamilton, Terra and Anderson halls to receive non-perishable food donations (no glass containers, please). Staff, faculty and students are encouraged to participate. For more information, contact Eileen Grabosky at 215-717-6036.

Crafts Banquet Review in 'Glass Quarterly' Blog
The Crafts department's recent banquet, exhibition and sale, "Once Upon a Banquet…A Grimm Wandering," received a positive review in a Glass Quarterly blog post. Set in Solmssen Court in Hamilton Hall, the events featured hundreds of student works inspired by the classic tales of the Brothers Grimm, including goblets, baskets, crowns and tiaras, candelabras, flatware and more.

Alumna to Receive Honored Educator Award
Photographer Deborah Willis '75 (Photography) will receive the Honored Educator Award at "Facing Diversity: Leveling the Playing Field in the Photographic Arts," the 47th National Conference of the Society for Photographic Education, March 4-7 at the Marriott Downtown Philadelphia. Named among the 100 most important people in photography by American Photography Magazine, Willis is chair and professor of Photography and Imaging at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. The former SPE board chair is also a 2005 Guggenheim and Fletcher Fellow, and a 2000 MacArthur Fellow. Writing for Film & Television Faculty Member Saylor's Feature Film Accepted at Two Indian Film Festivals
"God's Country, Off Route 9," an independent film by Steven Saylor, an assistant professor in the Writing for Film and Television program at the University of the Arts, has been accepted into two Indian film festivals. The "dramedy" co-starts Theater Arts professor Johnnie Hobbs Jr. and alumna Alisa Howard '08 (Theater Arts). Read more.

Joe Santore '69 Shows 'Recent Work' in New York City
New York City's Lohin Geduld Gallery presents "Recent Work," its first exhibition of paintings and drawings by Joseph Santore '69 (Painting / Drawing). Time is a critical element in Santore's art. He studies his subjects for months, searching collections of objects, figures and interiors for intriguing relationships. The longer he looks, the more that is revealed.

School of Music Student's Band Wins Contest to Open PacTour in Philly
Practically Single, the band with which Drum major Nick Costas plays, recently won a battle of the bands to open the PacTour performance when it stops in Philadelphia at the Trocadero Theatre this Wednesday. The PacTour is a 35-city tour of the United States that runs through December and features Saosin, innerpartysystem, P.O.S. and Eye Alaska. As the Philadelphia winner, the band was entered into a contest with the other 34 finalists for a grand prize that includes a management deal, Ernie Ball guitar/bass player sponsorship, and a $1,000 Pacific Sunwear shopping spree. The band will be flown to Los Angeles to perform live on FUELtv and record with Keith Armstrong (Green Day, Paramore, Dave Matthews Band). Tickets for this all-ages show are available online.

Reception for 'Beautiful Creatures' Photo Show at Academy of Natural Sciences
The University community is invited to attend a reception for "Beautiful Creatures," an exhibition of 15 Photography student-shot black and white images of the creatures inhabiting its Florence R. Liberal Arts faculty member Eileen Flanagan hosts a reading and discussion about her new book, The Wisdom to Know the Difference: When to Make a Change – and When to Let Go (Tarcher/Penguin). The book is based on the Serenity Prayer and endorsed by the Dalai Lama. Check out a recent interview with Flanagan about the book.

"Warren Seelig: Textile per se," a retrospective of work by Rockland, Maine-based fiber artist Warren Seelig, distinguished visiting professor in the Crafts department, runs at the Maryland Institute College of Art December 4 – March 14. SynthSig Meeting
SynthSig (Synthesis Special Interest Group), a group of students, faculty and friends interested in electronic and digital music synthesis, will hold its second meeting, featuring the iPhone/iTouch as a creative tool to make electronic music. We will look at apps that are freestanding synthesizers as well as apps that interface to digital synths such as TouchOSC and iTM controllers. We invite anyone that uses an iPhone/iTouch synth app to demonstrate and discuss their work. We are open to any other smartphone music synthesis apps as well. There will also be a demonstration of the Novation Launchpad controller and Ableton Live 8. For more information, contact Tom Porett.

Creative Economy-Driven Grant Opportunity
Creative Industry Workforce grants will support creative non-profit and for-profit businesses through funding for facilities-related projects linked to job creation such as renovated office space, mixed-use facilities, artist workspace and creative industry incubators. The grants are a collaborative effort between Philadelphia's Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy and the Commerce Department the funding for which comes from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act Community Development Block Grant program. Those interested in pursuing these grants are invited to a public meeting at City Hall. The deadline for this grant opportunity is December 18. Submit any pertinent questions via email.

Roger Hane '61 Retrospective
Magazine images, book covers, record jackets and advertisements from the 11-year career of the celebrated artist Roger Hane '61 (Illustration), the illustrator of C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series, the rock band Cream’s "Goodbye" album and Carlos Castaneda’s book A Separate Reality. Roger Hane: Art, Times & Tragedy (Vanguard Publications) was published this summer and contains nearly 300 pages of art and biography of the prolific illustrator who met with a senseless and untimely death in 1974 at the age of 35.

'Bedpan Elegance'
William W. DuBois' minimalist photographs of vintage bedpans reveal the inherent elegance and form of these mundane objects of past medical practice. Large-scale color digital images examine the sculptural qualities embodied in their design, while viewers explore the shapes, colors and textures of these artifacts.

'Marking Places, Retracing Spaces'
A group show investigating how remnants transform our ideas, memories and activities. Whether we erase our memories ourselves, as in the case of Joel Barish in the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," or revisit the fragments of broken memories to form a mash-up, these actions transform our ideas of space and time. These transactions with the past are catalytic in understanding our surroundings and enrich the future. Featuring works by Ann Torke, Taili Wu, Karl Mendonca, Liz Murphy Thomas and Ryan Sarah Murphy.
