Faculty, staff and students are invited to a University Forum at which President Buffington will update the University community on a number of topics, including the work of the academic and administrative task forces, and a brief financial overview.

Deadlines Approaching for Study Abroad Funding Opportunities
Application deadlines for funding opportunities to study abroad are fast approaching, including the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (October 1), U.S. Fulbright Student Program 2010-2011 (October 2) and Worldnomads.com Travel Photography Scholarship (October 4). These and other opportunities are posted to the University’s online Scholarship Bulletin Board. Additional information can also be found on the scholarship bulletin board outside of the Student Financial Services Office on the second floor of Hamilton Hall. Students applying for scholarships and/or grants who would like help compiling materials, organizing applications or editing essays should contact Amanda Black, Associate Director of Student Financial Services, at 215-717-6137.
Student Flu Shots – Get Yours While You Can
The University's Health Services will be giving free seasonal flu shots to students through October 7. Shots are on a first-come, first-served basis. The Health and Disability Services office is located in 306 Gershman Hall and is open Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 2 – 5 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Information regarding the availability of the H1N1 vaccine will be available in the next few weeks. For additional information, contact Suzanne Scott or LeeAnn Kinney at 215-717-6320.
Dorney Park's Halloween Haunt Registration
Student Life is sponsoring a trip to Dorney Park for its yearly Halloween festivities on October 23. First-come, first-served registration runs through October 22 and occurs in the Student Life suite in Gershman Hall.

Theater Arts Major Earns Prestigious Scholarship
Congratulations to Theater Arts junior Henian Boone, a 2009 Congressional Black Caucus Performing Arts scholarship recipient. The $3,000 scholarship is awarded to students who have demonstrated exemplary command of a performing art. He received a check and gold medal last week in Washington, D.C., at the Celebration of Leadership in the Fine Arts at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. At the celebration, the Congressional Black Caucus acknowledged all of their visual and performing arts scholarship recipients, and honored fine arts leaders Sam Gilliam and Tyler Perry.
CAD Faculty Member Van Keuren Exhibiting at Woodmere Photography Triennial
Sarah Van Keuren, a Printmaking adjunct professor, is one of eight local photographers to be featured in the third "Woodmere Triennial of Contemporary Photography," on display through January 2010. Woodmere’s Triennial exhibitions, initiated in 2003, bring together works by the finest of these artists in a popular celebration of a medium whose power to move us keeps growing. This year’s Triennial curator is Stephen Perloff, founder and editor of The Photo Review. In addition to Van Keuren, photographers John E. Dowell, Jr., Emmet Gowin, Martha Madigan, Andrea Modica, Zoe Strauss, Ron Tarver and Daniel Traub will have work on display.

Blended Learning Course Design Seminar
The College of Art and Design invites the University community to the online seminar "10 Ways to Improve Blended Learning Course Design." The 28-page seminar handout can be downloaded online. For best results, check your system's video and audio compatibility before the seminar. If you have a problem connecting, call the UArts Help Desk at 215-717-OOPS (x6677). CAD has access to the seminar the three days following its initial presentation. If departments would like to present the seminar for faculty who are unable to attend on September 29, please contact Nancy Burlan.

UArts Literary Society Meeting
The quest for identity is never easy. Finding one's place is made more puzzling by the fact that there is no place in ordinary society for extraordinary individuals. The UArts Literary Society has changed that. The group is reading: The Glass Mountain by Donald Barthelme, Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett, Ape by Richard Edson, Heroin by Lou Reed, Seven Prose Poems by Charles Simic and A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. The Autumn Society Celebrates 'Dia De Los Muertos'
The University community is invited to a First Friday opening reception celebrating the Autumn Society's show "Dia De Los Muertos" (Day of the Dead). The show, which captures the spirit of the holiday, features more than 40 pieces, each interpreting "Dia de los Muertos," typically a Mexican celebrated holiday, in which families bring offerings (such as food and mementos) to remember and celebrate their loved ones who have passed away. University of the Arts grad Joseph Game serves as curator for the group that started in 2006 and comprises over 100 members, many of whom are University of the Arts Illustration grads. DesignPhiladelphia Call for Volunteers
There are many opportunities for the University to get involved in at DesignPhiladelphia, the largest national celebration of its kind. This city-wide cultural event spotlights all things design from architecture to interior design, fashion to product design, textile to graphic design. It's a journey exploring exhibitions, workshops, studio tours, lectures, special events and product roll-outs that inspire, engage, excite and delight. Those interested in volunteering between October 1 – 15 have a few opportunities:

School Store Call for Art
The University's school store is accepting submissions from students to be reviewed for exhibition in the store's large wall spaces and glass-enclosed case. For consideration, students must email images and a submission form to store manager Susie Oudshoorn or hand-deliver the submission form and images on a CD to the school store (307 S. 13th Street). Students will be paid all profits from any of their work that is sold. Submission forms are available at the school store.

A collection of art from the nearly 70-year career of alumna Marie Ulmer, curated by alumnae Candace Karch (Bambi Gallery) and Janel Rivera Frey (Proximity Gallery). A 1941 graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Design, Ulmer is among the University’s oldest living alumni.
