Media Arts Senior Travis Walton Waugh Wins Talented Youth Award
Media Arts senior Travis Walton Waugh has earned the 2009 National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) New Talent Award (ages 18-22) for his eight-minute film Fairytales, that asks the questions "what happens to our imaginations when we are left alone? And what creatures are conjured to occupy the space our loneliness now controls?" The festival was held in Seattle April 24 – 26.

School of Music Alumnus Receives Richard Tucker Award
Stephen Costello ’03 (Voice) is the winner of the 2009 Richard Tucker Award, a $30,000 prize that recognizes American singers considered to be on the threshold of a significant, international opera career. Costello made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Arturo in "Lucia di Lammermoor" in 2007.

New Funding Opportunities for Students
The University's Student Financial Services Office has received new funding opportunities for students: The B. Davis Scholarship and the New England Printing and Publishing Council Graphic Arts Scholarship. These and other opportunities are posted to the University’s online Scholarship Bulletin Board. Additional information can also be found on the scholarship bulletin board outside of the Student Financial Services Office on the second floor of Hamilton Hall. Students applying for scholarships and/or grants who would like help compiling materials, organizing applications or editing essays should contact Amanda Black, Associate Director of Student Financial Services at 215-717-6137.

Drum Sale

Lab Closure
The Imaging Lab on the 6th floor of Anderson Hall will close for the summer due to construction. Friday, May 15, is the last day of operations. Printing services will be available in the Imaging Lab on the 13th floor of Terra Hall, Monday – Friday, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. for the entire summer. Both labs will be open in time for the fall semester. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Amanda D’Amico at ext. 6460.

Crafts Department Exhibition: 'Out of Hand'
Out of Hand is an exhibition of metalwork, fibers, jewelry, ceramics, glass and mixed media by 25 crafts students. While the work varies greatly in terms of media and content, from silver jewelry to video installation, soft sculpture to stoneware, these young artists are united in their consideration for and dexterity with their chosen materials. Come and experience the work of the next generation of craftsmen.

Alumna Elyce Abrams at Bridgette Mayer Gallery
Please join the Bridgette Mayer Gallery for the third solo show of painter Elyce Abrams ’04 (MFA, Ceramics / Painting / Sculpture), titled "Long Distance," which explores ideas of the effect of light on experience, and whose paintings depict deconstructed landscapes spanning vast physical and emotional distances. The works include acrylic-on-panel paintings ranging from 16" x 20" to 12" x 88". The exhibit runs through May 30, 2009

Service Opportunity
The University of the Arts has partnered with the Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development (PHENND) and AmeriCorps to host the AmeriCorps Scholars in Service to Pennsylvania program. There are two full-time (450 hours of service) and five minimum-time (300 hours of service) slots open. After one year of volunteering at the student’s organization of choice, they will receive up to $1,250. Any student interested should contact Laura Keegan at 215-717-6076. Deadline for application submission is May 15, 2009.

Retrospective by noted illustrator and alumnus Richard Amsel ’69 (Illustration), who developed iconic images of many well-known celebrities, including major movie and concert posters. Original artwork representing "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome," "The Champ," "Norma Rae," "Flash Gordon," several TV Guide covers and pieces representing Bette Midler’s album covers.
