NEWS & NOTESWork by Photo senior Anna Tas was featured in the Photo Annual in the May issue of Photo District News. Tas entered in the student category, but PDN placed her in the personal work section, along with the likes of Lauren Greenfield and Martin Schoeller. “My work is deeply personal, yet at the same time highly ambiguous,” Tas said. “This series explores the stages of grief and dealing with death, the dark thoughts that cannot be articulated through words.” Check it out at http://gallery.pdnevents.com/annual2008/.

Ron Kanter, one-time adjunct and visiting professor in Communication, premiered his documentary “New Cops – An Inside Look at the Philadelphia Police” on Friday on WHYY. For eight months, director/cameraman Kanter followed the members of Class 332 through the Philadelphia Police Academy, capturing their transformation from ordinary citizens to professional police officers. Five years later, Kanter returned for “ride-alongs” and shot hundreds of hours of tape to see how they do the job and what the job has done to them.

Writing for Film and TV faculty member Steve Saylor announced that his feature film “Beat the Air” will be distributed in Australia and New Zealand, with an eye toward DVD and television sales by Angerman Distribution, an Australian company specializing in independent films.

“Studies in Transfalumination” by Media Arts faculty member Peter Rose is being shown as part of the 14th Hamburg International Short Film Festival. He also just returned from a retrospective of his films and videos as part of “Diversions: A Festival of Experimental Film and Video” in Edinburgh, Scotland. His “Odysseus in Ithaca” is screening as part of “Homer: The Myth of Troy in Literature and Art” at Antikenmuseum Basel in Switzerland and Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim, Germany. In April, Rose also had a retrospective of his work as part of “First Person Cinema” at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo.
