Women and Pop Art Exhibition Takes Shape
print version
"Beyond the Surface: Women and Pop Art 1958-1968," a first of its kind exhibition to be mounted at the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery at The University of the Arts in January 2010, will be tracked through a running video blog documentary. The first episode has been posted at
http://www.womenandpopart.blogspot.com. New episodes are scheduled to appear approximately every three months.
Including works by Chryssa, Niki de Saint Phalle, Rosalyn Drexler, Marisol, Dorothy Grebenak, Jann Haworth, Kay Kurt, Lee Lozano, Marjorie Strider, Idelle Weber and Joyce Weiland, the exhibition, initiated by Curator and Exhibitions Program Director Sid Sachs, will examine the impact women have had on the traditionally male-dominated field of Pop Art and intends to expand the narrowly defined Pop Art movement and reevaluate its critical reception. In uncovering important female artists, the show will enlarge the canon to more accurately reflect the women working internationally during this period.
Scheduled to travel to Tufts University in the spring of 2010, with other venues pending, the exhibition is being supported by funding from the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative (PEI), a program of the Philadelphia Center for Arts and Heritage, funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts and administered by The University of the Arts. The Philadelphia Cultural Management Initiative supports the blog.
