ANNOUNCEMENTS
UArts Celebrates 140 Years of Making
The fall of 2016 is an exciting time for the University of the Arts, as it marks the launch of the University's 140th Anniversary Celebration, "The Maker's Moment." This yearlong series of events will honor our impressive past and begin moving forward with President David Yager's ambitious vision for the institution's future. Kicking off in October, the celebration will run through Commencement in May 2017, and feature a series of exciting events and activities, including:

140th Anniversary Gala
Creative Black Tie Gala packed with entertainment from acclaimed dancers, musicians, visual artists and actors from the UArts community, along with a very special performance.

Hyatt at The Bellevue

Inauguration of President David Yager
We will ceremoniously welcome President Yager to the University of the Arts community. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

Fall 2016 Building Hours
Effective Monday, August 29, Anderson Hall, Merriam Hall and Terra Hall will be open daily from 7 a.m. until 2 a.m. Hamilton Hall will be open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no after-hours access to academic buildings, which will be closed nightly from 2 a.m. until 7 a.m. Hamilton Hall evening hours are primarily to allow late access (until 2 a.m.) to the CAMD Furness Studios in the back of Hamilton Hall. The front entry to Hamilton will close at 8 p.m. weekdays, but the Furness Studios will be accessible through the Pine Street entry. For the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 5, all academic buildings will be fully closed. Residence halls will be accessible to residents as per usual.

UArts will welcome the Class of 2020 at New Student Orientation (NSO), created to help new students transition to life at the University of the Arts.

Alumna Named to American Craft Council College of Fellows
Myra Mimlitsch-Gray BFA '84 (Crafts) was among the 2016 inductees into the American Craft Council College of Fellows. This prestigious award is presented biennially to honor those who have demonstrated outstanding artistic achievement, leadership and service in the field of craft. Recipients will be honored at a ceremony on October 14 during the Council’s upcoming "Present Tense" conference.

Work by Film Faculty Member Recognized at UFVA Conference
UArts Film + Video Senior Lecturer Jenn Zaylea was awarded third place in New Media at the University Film and Video Association's 70th Annual Conference held August 1-4 at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. The interactive piece, titled "Language: As You Hear It," reflects the auditory and visual feeling of being "other" hidden in shadows in this case and having one’s own story obscured by that which casts a shadow.

Free Exhibit for Students at Philadelphia Museum of Art
MA in Museum Communication Program Director Joseph Gonzales, who also serves as a member of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Community Advisory Group, invites students, faculty and staff to view the upcoming Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910–1950 exhibition that will run at the PMA October 25, 2016 – January 8, 2017. Admission is free for students with a valid UArts ID and is included in the general admission fee for all others. Faculty who include the exhibit in their fall courses can contact the museum's education department to request a special college tour for a $75 fee.

GD50: We Are Here
The UArts Graphic Design program commemorates its 50th anniversary with We Are Here. Alumni, students, faculty and representatives from the global design communities will gather to honor the program through a collection of exhibitions, events, a daylong symposium and an alumni celebration.

Visiting Writers Series: Annie Liontas
The University of the Arts' Visiting Writers Series is sponsored by the Creative Writing program and features acclaimed contemporary writers who visit campus each year. This reading features Annie Liontas, whose debut novel, Let Me Explain You (Scribner), was featured in The New York Times Book Review as Editor's Choice and selected by the American Book Association as a 2015 Indies Introduce Debut and Indies Next title.

Knowing Dance More Lecture Series
Presented by the School of Dance, "Knowing Dance More" is a series of lectures, conversations and informal showings led by important artists and scholars in the international field of dance.

Boris Charmatz
Community consultant and former Dance/UP executive director Lois Welk will engage choreographer Boris Charmatz in a public conversation focusing on artistic practice, public participation and the evolution of a new vision for dance as a time-based visual art. Charmatz is well known for his innovative and provocative post-modern choreographic work.

Choreographer and performer Reggie Wilson, executive and artistic director of First and Heel Performance Group, will present "The Ring shout, African Dance and Post-Modern Dance."

Beth Gill
Guggenheim, Doris Duke Impact and Bessie Award winning choreographer Beth Gill will present a lecture titled "Portrait Study," where she will narrate her story in a casual, thoughtful, specific and intimate way so that attendees get a real picture of how she has personally navigated, shaped and battled her identity and career as a choreographer.

Sol Mednick Gallery (Terra Hall, 15th floor)

Accomplished Visions: The Arabs: Samer Mohdad
Based in Lebanon, photographer Samer Mohdad’s work explores the concept of Arab identity. He traveled widely for many years in the Middle East, North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, portraying the difficult everyday life of the people of these countries moving between war and faith, in unadorned and personal inside views and news.

West Africa: The Road & The Quarry: David Pace
San Francisco Bay-area artist David Pace has been photographing in the West African country of Burkina Faso for over a decade. He lives for more than a month every year in the same house in the remote farming village of Bereba where he documents aspects of daily life. This exhibition features images from two of Pace’s ongoing projects: “Sur La Route (On the Road)” and “The Karaba Brick Quarry.”

UArts presents the Fall 2016 New Student Showcase, a group exhibition of work created by incoming students from the class of 2020. The Art of Sarah Jacoby
Sarah Jacoby is an illustrator and artist, a writer and all around creative thinker and maker. She creates idyllic landscapes populated with curious creatures. Her paintings are poetic, lyrical and whimsical.
