Philly Declares July 19 'Jerry Pinkney Day' in Honor of Renowned Illustrator/Alum
The University of the Arts is pleased to join the Free Library of Philadelphia, SafeKidsStories.com, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Mayor’s Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy to celebrate “Jerry Pinkney Day,” which Mayor Jim Kenney will proclaim on July 19, 2016, in honor of award-winning children’s book illustrator/author and UArts Silver Star Outstanding Alumni Award recipient Jerry Pinkney DIPL '60 (Advertising Design).

Alumni Participate in DNC's 'Donkeys Around Town' Program
In celebration of the upcoming Democratic National Convention being held July 25-28 in Philadelphia, 57 fiberglass donkeys have been created representing the 50 states, Washington, D.C., and the six U.S. territories. The donkeys, the symbol of the Democratic Party, are on display throughout the city through July 31. Several of them were painted by UArts alumni, including Katie Haire BFA '10 (Illustration), MAT '11 (Visual Arts), who created the New York and Montana donkeys; Barbara Sosson BFA '71 (Painting), who took on Iowa and Texas; and recent grad Collin Scott BFA '16 (Multidisciplinary Fine Arts), who created the Mississippi and Ohio donkeys.

Music Alum Featured in Broadway's 'Ham4Ham' Show
Drummer Dan Berkery BM '11 (Instrumental Performance) was featured at the June 29 “Ham4Ham” show, a free sidewalk performance held outside Broadway’s Richard Rogers Theatre where the hit musical “Hamilton” is running. The brainchild of “Hamilton” creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda as something of a consolation prize for fans seeking lottery tickets, “Ham4Ham” features cast members, celebrities and other special guests. Watch the Ham4Ham show >>

Alum's Documentary Wins Film Festival Award
“The Anthropologist,” a new documentary co-directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Seth Kramer BFA ’96 (Film + Video), has been awarded the EarthVision Environmental Feature Award at the Santa Cruz Film Festival. The film, which premiered at the Doc NYC Festival last November and was screened at the UN Climate Change Conference held in Paris in December, looks at climate change through the lens of two anthropologists. His other films include “The Linguists,” “The New Recruits” and “Evocateur: The Morton Downey Jr. Movie.”

Counseling Center Hosts Art Therapy Conference
On June 29, the UArts Counseling Center hosted the summer retreat for the Philadelphia Small College Counseling Center Director's Consortium. This mini-conference, organized by Abe Zubarev, director of Counseling at UArts, focused on educating local counseling center directors about mental health concerns specific to artists in college as well as offering experiential workshops on art, music and dance/movement therapies. Participants from UArts included art therapist and alumna Michelle Dean BFA ’92 (Illustration), CERT ’92 (Art Therapy); music therapist and faculty member John Berns; and dance therapist and alumna Natasha Levitas BFA '00 (Dance Education). Other participating schools included Thomas Jefferson University, University of the Sciences, Rutgers Camden, Eastern University, Harcum College and Valley Forge Military Academy & College. The UArts Counseling Center is working to increase awareness about the use of creative arts in fostering the mental health and wellness of artists in college.

ID Alum Helps Build Skatepark at Philly Playground
UArts alumnus Sebastian Borror BS ’14 (Industrial Design) has been working with the Franklin's Paine Skatepark Fund over the last year, helping to build a new skatepark at McCreesh Playground in Southwest Philadelphia. The ribbon cutting was held July 1. Borror has been involved in every step of the process, from community engagement events and fundraising to working with local government and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.

Faculty, Alumni Speak at Design Ed Conference
Several UArts faculty and alumni spoke at the Learn x Design2016 Conference held June 25-26 in Wilmington, Del. Presenters included Anthony Guido, director of the MDes in Design for Social Impact program; Industrial Design Lecturer Phil Holcombe; recent grad Tito Williams BS '16 (Industrial Design); and Rande Blank, director of the MAT in Visual Arts Education program.

Liberal Arts Professor Gives Gallery Talk
Liberal Arts Professor Nancy G. Heller co-presented a public gallery talk with curator Patrick McGrady on June 24 regarding a retrospective exhibition of original fine arts prints by her late father, Dr. Jules Heller. The exhibit, which continues through August 14, is at the Palmer Museum of Art at the Pennsylvania State University in State College, Pa.

A Midsummer Night's Dream
Friends of Columbus Square presents free outdoor performances of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” a family-friendly, musical, athletic take on Shakespeare’s classic comedy from REV Theatre Company. The production is directed by Ira Brind School of Theater Arts faculty member Rosey Hay, REV’s co-artistic director, and features several UArts alumni and current students. All performances begin at 7 p.m. Running time: 2 1/2 hours with intermission. Bring blankets or chairs, a picnic and the kids.

Climate Change: Emily E. Erb
Presented by the Hamilton Hall Public Arts Initiative. A Richmond native, Philadelphia-based artist Emily Erb was first introduced to silk painting while an undergraduate, but she honed her skills while traveling to Madagascar for three months from 2005 to 2006.
