ThisWeek@UArts will begin its bi-weekly summer schedule on Monday, May 16. The regular weekly schedule will resume at the beginning of the fall semester. To submit your news and events for inclusion, please email news@uarts.edu no later than noon on Thursday before the next issue.
Summer Building Hours
In an effort to accommodate summer activities and operate efficiently, building hours have been modified beginning on Wednesday, May 11 through Wednesday, August 24. All buildings will be locked at the closing hour. If there are scheduled events beyond the closing time, we will keep the buildings open to accommodate those events, at the cost of the requesting department. Contact JoAnn Malandro at 215-717-6826 with any events.
Mangia Summer Hours
Mangia in Hamilton Hall is open today, May 9, 2016, through September 1, 2016, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Between May 9 and June 1, Mangia will serve a limited menu. Starting June 1, Mangia will return to its full menu.

Alum Screens Student Film That Inspired 'Billy & Mandy' Series
Eight years before the Emmy Award-winning series “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy” debuted on the Cartoon Network, Adam Maxwell Burton BFA ’96 (Animation), aka Maxwell Atoms, created a short during his junior year at UArts. That student film, titled “Billy and Mandy in Trepanation of the Skull and You,” was the inspiration for the dark animated comedy and was screened for the very first time on April 30 at the Tromanimation Film Festival held in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Work by Photo Senior To Be Displayed in Terra Dining Hall
Students in Photography Professor Barbara Proud’s Professional Practices class collaborated with UArts food service provider Parkhurst Dining to create photos combining fine art with fresh food. “Chef’s Palette” by Casey Meyers ’16 (Photography) was chosen as the winner and will be displayed in Terra Dining Hall this fall. Meyers also received a $100 Visa gift card from Parkhurst; all other participating students received a $25 Visa gift card.
Faculty/Alum's 'Gilded Gates' Installed in Rittenhouse Square
"Gilded Gates," a series of ironwork bicycle racks designed by alumnus and Master Lecturer Jason Lempieri MID '04 (Industrial Design), were recently installed in Philadelphia’s renowned Rittenhouse Square. Commissioned by the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, “Gilded Gates” celebrates Philadelphia’s legendary ironwork while providing security for bicycles.
Alumna's 'Touch Tours' Featured on NewsWorks, NPR, CBS3
Philly Touch Tours, co-founded by alumna Trish Maunder MA '06 (Art Education), was recently featured on NewsWorks, NPR and CBS3. The organization provides cultural accessibility tours for the visually impaired. The stories focused on a two-hour tour of Philadelphia’s famous Italian Market, where Maunder led a group through the shops of various cheese, meat, fresh pasta and chocolate vendors.
Art Ed Student Wins Teaching Scholarship
Mixed-media artist Julien Tomasello MAT '17 (Visual Arts) has been awarded a 2016-2017 Hannah Amgott Memorial Scholarship from the Delaware Valley Education Consortium. The $1,500 award recognizes students pursuing teaching careers who exhibit excellence. The Society of Publication Designers Award winner served as art and photography editor on three Chronicle Books releases, including The New York Times best-selling Pantone on Fashion: A Century of Color in Design (Fall 2014), Art + Fashion: Collaborations & Connections Between Icons (November 2015) and Why Boys Need Parents (March 2016).
Maps by Illustration Students Featured on 'They Draw & Travel'
Map drawings by Illustration students in the Imaging Workshop course were selected to appear on They Draw & Travel, the internet's largest collection of illustrated travel maps created by artists from around the world. Featured freshmen include Brendan Lamb '19 (Illustration), Olivia Austin '19 (Illustration), Kelsey Durkin '19 (Illustration) and exchange student Jeanette Claesson (Illustration).
Professor Contributes to 2 Photo Books
Photography Associate Professor Harris Fogel wrote an essay for Thomas Kellner’s new book titled Black & White: 1997–2005 and was one of five contributors on A Quintology of Diaries by photographer Ferit Kuyas.

Composer, musical director, conductor, arranger and musician Tom Kitt, whose awards include a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and two Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations for the rock musical “Next to Normal,” will deliver the keynote address at UArts’ 138th Commencement ceremony.
