Summer Building Hours
In an effort to accommodate summer activities and operate efficiently, scheduled building hours have been set from May 16 to August 24. All buildings will be locked at the closing hour. Professor Named American Craft Council Fellow
Award-winning stained-glass artist Judith Schaechter, an adjunct professor in the Craft & Material Studies program, has been named a 2014 American Craft Council Fellow. This prestigious award is presented biennially to honor those who have demonstrated outstanding artistic achievement, leadership and service in the field of craft. Read more >>
Professor's Book Gets Glowing Review in 'Philadelphia Inquirer'
The Blessings by Assistant Professor and Creative Writing Director Elise Juska received a glowing review in the Sunday, May 4 issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer, which said, "Juska's moving, multifaceted portrait of the Blessing family gleams like a jewel." Released on May 6 from Grand Central Publishing, The Blessings was also recently named a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection for Summer 2014. Read the review >>
Wood Student Wins $15,000 Windgate Fellowship
Colin Pezzano '14 (Craft & Material Studies) has been named a 2014 Windgate Fellow by the Center for Craft, Creativity & Design. Awarded to 10 graduating college seniors from across the country with exemplary skill in craft, each Windgate Fellowship winner receives $15,000, one of the largest awards offered nationally to art students. Literary Mag to Publish Student's Short Fiction
Allegra Armstrong '17 (Creative Writing) will have her short fiction story, "The Will," published in the Summer/Fall 2014 issue of literary magazine The Same. The story was part of her UArts admissions portfolio. Read more >>
'Daily News' Raves About School of Music Collaboration
The Philadelphia Daily News raves about the very cool collaboration between the UArts "Z" Big Band and the Jost Project band, which features UArts School of Music faculty members Paul Jost, Tony Micelli and Kevin MacConnell. "They'll blow up classic rock with exceptionally polished big-band charts and red-hot playing, spotlighting 15 horn players plus electric guitar, keyboards, dual bassists and two alternating student drummers." 'You Are You' Book, Exhibit Featured in 'Huffington Post'
"You Are You," a collection of images documenting an annual weekend summer camp for gender-nonconforming children and their families by photographer Lindsay Morris, is featured in the May 3 issue of The Huffington Post's "Gay Voices." The exhibit, which ran through May 10 at UArts' Gershman Hall, was made possible through the support of the University of the Arts, the UArts Photography program and Equality Forum. 'Politico Magazine' Features Professor's Photo Book
And I Said No Lord: A Twenty-One-Year-Old in Mississippi in 1964, a pictorial chronicle of Graphic Design Adjunct Professor Joel Katz's travels during the "Mississippi Summer" of 1964 at the height of the civil rights movement, is featured in Politico Magazine. Tools for the Engaged Classroom: Teaching to Inspire Creative Community
Please join the Center for Teaching and Learning at the annual May event that focuses on tools for teaching. This year's event will offer ideas to ignite your students' imaginations and critical engagement. Faculty from UArts will share their strategies and invite discussion. Full-time and part-time faculty are invited to spend all or part of the day. The event begins with a continental breakfast, includes a casual lunch and concludes with a wine and cheese reception. Stuart Elster '88: Cinderella Liberty
Junior Projects is pleased to present “Cinderella Liberty,” an exhibition of new paintings by Fine Arts Assistant Professor and alumnus Stuart Elster BFA '88 (Fine Arts). In his latest work, Elster broadens his inquiry into the nature of power structures vis-à-vis “Dazzle Camouflage,” a graphic technique used during the World Wars to alter the visual perception of a ship’s location.
