Art Unleashed to Celebrate One-of-a-Kind Work by UArts Students, Faculty and Alumni
Preview Party is April 9; Public sale and exhibition to take place April 10-15
March 12, 2014
The University of the Arts will host its much anticipated Art Unleashed event April 9-15, showcasing the work of emerging and established artists. Celebrating its fifth year, the show features the original work of students, faculty and alumni through an exhibition and sale on the UArts campus in the heart of Center City Philadelphia. From cutting-edge contemporary jewelry to ceramics, photography, crafts, furniture, painting, sculpture and illustration, this event is an extraordinary opportunity for the public to acquire stunning, original pieces from across genres.
"Art Unleashed not only showcases the extraordinary talents of our UArts community, but by seeing the show, visitors and buyers gain a clear understanding of what makes UArts so distinctive," said Sean T. Buffington, president of the University of the Arts. "Our alumni and faculty are successful, working artists who contribute to the creative economy of the region and the country in material ways. This show only reinforces that while also introducing the next generation."
The exhibition and sale will kick off with a Preview Party on April 9 from 6 to 8 p.m., where guests will have exclusive access to view and purchase pieces in advance of the public exhibition. Each year, Art Unleashed is the University's largest fundraiser, raising money for the Sam S. McKeel Promising Young Artists Scholarship Fund and connecting art collectors and enthusiasts with promising and proven artists.
For a more intimate experience, a special VIP Reception complete with champagne and passed hors d'oeuvres will be held from 5 to 6 p.m., one hour prior to the Preview Party. VIP Reception tickets, which also include admission to the full Preview Party, are $250; Preview Party-only tickets are $150.
PUBLIC EXHIBITION AND SALE
Art Unleashed is open to the public with free admission from Thursday, April 10 through Tuesday, April 15, noon to 5 p.m. daily. With hundreds of pieces from a wide spectrum of disciplines, Art Unleashed offers a unique opportunity for both established collectors and first-time purchasers to connect directly with UArts faculty, alumni and, of course, students, the emerging generation of creators and visionaries.
This year's event will showcase the work of two noted UArts alumni: celebrated artist Dorothy (Dotty) Attie BFA '69 (Art Education) and renowned jeweler and sculptor Hratch Babikian BFA '83 (Jewelry)
As a painter, photographer and printmaker, Dotty Attie has been exhibiting in museums and galleries worldwide since the 1960s. Her paintings are in the collections of MoMA, the Whitney and the Brooklyn Museum. Attie is best known for her deconstructions of old master paintings, which she presents with modifications leading her work to play with concepts of originality and reproduction.
Inspired by nature and all life forms, Hratch Babikian creates jewelry and sculptures that are contemplative and stunning. Born in Beirut, Babikian resides in Philadelphia where he has his studio and is known for his hand-cast, custom-designed jewelry made with high-quality metals and gemstones. Much of his inspiration comes from his earlier lifetime in and around the coast of Lebanon. Art enthusiasts are taken by his work, calling it exotic, guttural and unique.
Both the Preview Party and the public exhibition will take place in Hamilton Hall at 320 South Broad Street.
