February 4, 2014
The Music Business, Entrepreneurship & Technology program at the University of the Arts will present a talk by Grammy Award-winning musician Michael League (pictured above center) on Friday, February 7 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in the Caplan Center at Terra Hall (211 S. Broad Street).
League is a songwriter, producer, arranger, bass player and leader of the Denton, Texas-born/Brooklyn, N.Y.-based jazz big band Snarky Puppy, whose rendition of the Brenda Russell song “Something” featuring Lala Hathaway took home the 2014 Grammy for Best R&B Performance. The song is included on the band’s 2013 release Family Dinner – Volume 1 (Ropeadope Records).
League is the epitomy of the modern musician as an entrepreneur and, since forming Snarky Puppy at the University of North Texas 10 years ago, he has booked all the tours, created and sold all the merchandise, arranged every detail of every recording, and served as the band’s manager. He has also composed and written music that has legends like Pat Metheny and Herbie Hancock singing his praises.
