Photo Faculty Member/Alum Releases Book
'Briar Patch' features images of West Philadelphia by Lecturer Jordan Baumgarten BFA '06 (Photography)
September 24, 2013
Photography Lecturer and alumnus Jordan Baumgarten BFA '06 (Photography) has just released his first book, a hardbound collection of images he took in his West Philadelphia neighborhood titled Briar Patch (Parts & Labor).
The book is about the dissonance felt when your home is somewhere you don't belong. The images explore a life and a relationship in the context of an at-times violent neighborhood and the anxiety of that looming violence coming into the home.
Baumgarten, who was recently interviewed by Vice magazine, will take part in a dual book signing and lecture with Brooklyn-based photographer Amani Willett at the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (1400 N. American Street, #103) on Saturday, September 28 at 6 p.m.
In addition to his BFA from UArts, the Philadelphia-based photographer received an MFA in Photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011. His work has been exhibited in New York, Miami, Philadelphia and Providence, and featured in multiple publications, including Flak Photo, Fraction Magazine and online in PDN’s Photo of the Day blog.
