Three recent University of the Arts Animation alumni and one current UArts student dominated the four-year college category at the 2nd annual Community Underground Film Festival (CUFF), held November 15 – 16 in Philadelphia.
UArts animations won four out of the category's six finalist spots, including the festival's Grand Prize winner, "Icarus" (above), a cutout and hand-drawn music video by Bonnie Brown BFA '12 (Animation).
"Earth Emergency" (below) by Su Yun Lim BFA '12 (Animation) won the prize for Best 4-Year College Film. Lim's senior thesis about a young alien who wreaks havoc on Earth with his toys until his mother discovers what he is up to was also named the top winner at the recent Bucks Fever FilmFest.
Other CUFF finalists included "Espiritu de los Boricua" by Jovanni Garced BFA '12 (Animation) and stop-motion puppet film "The Woodsman" (below) by David Romeo '14 (Animation).
Sponsored by the Community College of Philadelphia's Communication Arts program, CUFF features short films by local college and high school students and presentations by professional filmmakers and professors. Screened films were reviewed by a panel of judges, who chose the best shorts in six categories. Winners were announced at the festival's main event on November 15; contest finalists and winning films were replayed on November 16.
