Photo Student Work on Display at Philadelphia History Museum


'Face to Facebook' exhibit explores how portraiture has changed over the centuries

Work by Photography students from last year's Professional Practices classes is featured in the "Face to Facebook" exhibition at the newly reopened Philadelphia History Museum. The exhibit explores how portraiture has changed from the commissioned paintings of the 18th century to the snapshots used to identify ourselves in social media in the 21st century.

Included in the exhibit are photos of everyday Philadelphians that illustrate the informal nature of today's portraits taken by Photography senior Leon Syfrit and 2012 graduates Nathan Novak, Amanda Hagenbuch, Caitlin Lord, Tara Robertson, Nell Slaughter, Elizabeth Kreitschmann, Felicia Puff, Chelsea A. DeJesus, Cierra Butler and Michael Gail Malloy.

Also on view is work by such artists as Charles Willson Peale and Thomas Sully, along with daguerreotypes, vintage photographs and early camera equipment.

"Face to Facebook" runs through December 31 in PHM's second floor main gallery.
