April 2, 201
Junior Illustration major Samantha Schechter, whose artwork "The Haunted Hallway" (above) was selected for exhibition in this year's Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition, has been recognized for excellence with a $4,000 scholarship from the Society. Schechter was one of nine UArts Illustration students chosen as finalists in the annual competition.
The Society of Illustrators, along with private and corporate donors, grants scholarships to the top students featured in each year's student exhibition. From May 9 through June 2, the Museum of American Illustration in New York City will display the students' original artwork along with a full-color catalog. Awards and certificates will be given out during an opening reception on May 18.
Schechter, who studies with Professor Tim O'Brien, was among only 253 artists chosen from over 8,000 entries from nearly 90 colleges by a jury of professional illustrators and art directors. Pieces are accepted based on the quality of technique, concept and skill of medium used.
