A team of University of the Arts Crafts students will be among those competing in the first Morrow Design Competition (MDC), which will result in the production of the Langhorne Carpet Company’s new Eco Line and donations to conservation organizations.

The UArts team is among 11 groups from regional design programs competing for creative authorship of the 80-year-old mill’s 2012 Eco Line, which will feature two designs in multiple color combinations that will be woven on the mill’s Jacquard Wilton broadloom. Drawing their inspiration from the plant and animal kingdoms, the team entries will be judged next spring by a panel of leading design and marketing professionals.

“We have a great program and highly creative and motivated students who are enthusiastic about participating in the Morrow Design Competition,” said Crafts Associate Professor and Fibers Coordinator Mi-Kyoung Lee. “As concerned about the environment as they are passionate about design, they welcome the opportunity to compete against their peers. And they are thrilled to have the opportunity to design a line expressly for the historic Langhorne Carpet Company’s line.”

In addition to cash prizes, Langhorne will provide a portion of the sales proceeds to non-profit conservation organizations, including the Philadelphia Zoo, America’s first zoo, and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, sponsor of the Philadelphia Flower Show. The student-designers will be invited to tour and sketch at both the Zoo and the Flower Show as part of their research.

The University of the Arts will compete against teams from the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Penn State University, the Art Institute of Philadelphia, Drexel University, Moore College of Art and Design, Drexel University, Arcadia University, Rider University and the University of Delaware.
