Richard Amsel '69 (Illustration) created the iconic "Raiders of the Lost Ark" poster, which was recently named the No. 1 "Greatest Hand-Drawn Movie Poster" by TotalFilm.com, who called it "truly brilliant" and "the archetypal adventure poster."
Amsel, who died in 1985, illustrated posters for more than 30 other popular movies, including "Chinatown," "The Last Picture Show," "The Sting," "The Muppet Movie" and "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome."
In addition to movie posters, Amsel created numerous album covers and more than 40 cover portraits for TV Guide, with subjects as diverse as John Travolta, Frank Sinatra, Bette Midler, Elvis Presley, Lucille Ball, Johnny Carson and Katharine Hepburn. His 1977 Time magazine cover drawing of comedienne Lily Tomlin is in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian Institute.
The University of the Arts hosted a major exhibition of Amsel's work in 2009 and he was honored posthumously with the Silver Star Alumni Award that same year.
