March 28, 2011
Children's book drawings by University of the Arts Illustration senior Miguel Co took the top prize in the 2011 William H. Ely Illustration Exhibition competition.
Co's winning illustrations, which depict the highly fantasized animals in author Rudyard Kipling's classic Just-So Stories for Little Children, were chosen as the first place winner from among artwork submitted by the entire senior class of Illustration majors.
This annual competitive exhibit gives the graduating artists the opportunity to have thousands of people see their work, which ranges from CD jackets to concert posters, and from magazine spreads to elaborately ornamented surfboards.
Endowed by its namesake in 1964, the William H. Ely Illustration Exhibition is a juried exhibit with cash prizes awarded for the top three entries.
Second place honors went to Laura Yumang's editorial pieces (digital media), while Lauren Lopez's snow boards (digital media) took third place.
Honorable mentions were awarded to Kate Egan (novelty book; ink, digital media), Rachel Kantor (album covers; mixed media) and Jon Laing (editorial, gouache).
