Dean's Welcome Message
Greetings, and welcome to the Division of Liberal Arts.
Long charged with providing a solid academic foundation for the gifted young dancers, actors, musicians, designers and visual artists who come to the University of the Arts eager to dedicate themselves to a life in the arts, Liberal Arts these days is the scene of some exciting artistic developments of its own.
In Fall 2013, we are launching two new degree programs: a BFA in Creative Writing and a BA in Film & Media Studies. These programs blend tradition with innovation to produce the kind of educational experience only UArts can offer. Our Creative Writing majors will master the traditional craft demands of the short story, the poem and creative nonfiction – but they will also explore emerging, often hybrid forms in theatrical writing, graphic narrative and digital media, and they will create dynamic collaborative projects with their classmates in the performing and visual arts. Similarly, students in our Film & Media Studies program will study the history, aesthetics and cultural contexts of cinema and its allied art forms while also learning the principles of cinematography, editing and web design.
Even as we launch ourselves into these new programs of study, we in Liberal Arts remain dedicated to providing all UArts students with the skills and knowledge so crucial to building – and sustaining – a flourishing artistic practice. From First Year Writing to our innovative Humanities Seminars, courses in SIFT (Scientific Inquiry Foundation Track) and exciting, in-depth Period Interpretation classes (not to mention our many electives in art history, literature, philosophy, religion, and the natural and social sciences), Liberal Arts illuminates the intersections of art and life by bringing the world into the studio. We are proud of the role we play in helping to launch our students from their studios into the world.
