Saturday, December 15 marks the last week of Saturday School classes for the fall 2007 semester.  Happy holidays!

The Saturday School: More Than a Century-long Tradition

The Saturday School at the University of the Arts has been providing quality arts education to Philadelphia area students in grades Kindergarten through 12 for over 100 years. The Saturday Schoool was founded by Miss Isabella Bradley, a graduate of the class of 1900 of the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art (a precursor to The University of the Arts). The Saturday School was formally established in the fall of 1900.

The Pre-College Saturday School at The University of the Arts offers college-level courses designed specifically for high school students in grades 9 through 12. Courses are offered in the fine arts, crafts, computers, design, media, writing, and communication. The goal of the Pre-College Saturday School is to foster investigation and exploration into the principles of creativity while focusing on the personal development of the individual student.

Class sizes are small in the Saturday School, ranging from 10 to 18 students. Classes are held in our state-of-the-art facilities; students taking printmaking, computers, jewelry, or figure drawing, will be using professional tools and equipment. Students have the opportunity to learn the visual and verbal vocabularies of their chosen media of study through assignments and critiques.

All work created in the Pre-College Saturday School is portfolio suitable and students will be encouraged to keep a sketch journal both within and outside the Saturday School Program. Whether students intend on future college-level study in the arts or are just exploring a new media, technology, or medium, they will have the opportunity to discover whether the arts may lie in their future.

The faculty of the Pre-College Saturday School are talented artists and dedicated education professionals. Instructors have attained the highest degree of study in their field, and exhibit, publish or perform their work on an ongoing basis locally and regionally. Many of our instructors are alumni of The University of the Arts and/or teach at the undergraduate level.

The Pre-College Saturday School is committed to providing students with an enriching experience, whether developing a portfolio, writing sample, short video, or multimedia piece for college admission or just exploring an interest in an arts discipline. Come see why so many students return year after year to the Saturday School at the University of the Arts.

Supplies are the responsibility of the student. While the Saturday School will provide some basic materials, students will receive an estimated cost at registration and an actual supply list on the first day of class; the items on this list must be obtained by the student. Students are expected to bring money with them on the first day of class in order to purchase supplies. Costs of supplies varies with the course, and can range between $50 and $120.
