Student Services
The University of the Arts creates a structured and partially supervised, urban campus environment in which our students can foster independence while nurturing their artistic creativity. The Pre-College Summer Institute is geared towards a mature and independent young adult excited by the opportunity to learn and live semi-independently. Students are expected to take initiative and come forward for assistance if they encounter difficulties or concerns in either the classroom or in their residential situation. If a family is seeking a fully protected environment, they should strongly consider whether this program meets the needs of their child.
That stated, the health and well-being of our students is of paramount concern in the Pre-College Summer Institute. There are numerous individuals and resources available on campus to assist a student in being successful in this program. In order to ensure optimum health and safety, each student and their family are required to complete forms before they arrive on campus. These forms are due no later than Saturday, May 30 and include the following:
• Parent/Guardian Permission and Release Form
• Emergency Contact Form
• Health Care Provider's Report
• Medical Release Form
• Copy of student's/parent's health insurance card
• Proof of age
• Housing Contract (for residential students only)
A Note About the Forms
Incomplete or illegible forms will be returned to families. Students who fail to submit these completed forms are not permitted to move into the residence halls or attend classes. Physicians, parents and/or students are expected to fully disclose any and all medical or psychological conditions on the appropriate forms. Failure to complete these forms completely and/or honestly will result in removal of the student from the program. It is the responsibility of parents to inform Pre-College Programs of any changes that need to be made to the forms once submitted. Failure to do so may also result in a student’s termination from the program.
Health Services
Health Services staff members review the Health Care Provider’s Report in the weeks prior to the start of the program. Health concerns are noted and may require a mandatory visit to Health Services or Counseling during the first week of classes. If a parent or student has any concerns, that individual should write a letter describing any health-related issues and attach it to the health form. The nurse may contact families in the weeks prior to the start of the programs to discuss these matters.
During the Pre-College Summer Institute, health care providers are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.
Illness and Injury
In instances of medical emergencies, students will be taken to Pennsylvania Hospital or Thomas Jefferson Hospital for care. Students who become ill or injured during the program and are unable to participate in classes will be required to leave the program (classes, as well as residence halls). These decisions are made by the Director of Health Services in conjunction with the Assistant Dean of Students and are final. Students dismissed for medical purposes are ineligible for a tuition refund but may request a prorated housing refund (less nonrefundable fees); requests must be submitted in writing and addressed to the Director of Pre-College Programs.
Counseling
Counseling services are available on campus Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. If a student is currently undergoing treatment, the student and his/her family are strongly encouraged to contact the Director of Counseling Services prior to their arrival on campus.
Disability Services
A student with a documented disability which has a significant impact upon a major life activity may be eligible to receive accommodations or services from the Office of Disability Services. Eligibility for reasonable accommodations is determined on an individual basis after current, comprehensive documentation has been received. If a student plans to request accommodations, documentation should be forwarded to the Office of Disability Services at least sixty days prior to the start of the program. Please direct any inquires regarding services for students with disabilities or documentation guidelines to the Director of Disability Services.
Student Communication
Communication is critical in the Pre-College Summer Institute. Each residential student has a mailbox, which they are required to check each evening. Additionally, important notes may be delivered to students in class. We also have a weekly meeting for all students on Wednesday afternoon from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm. All students are required to attend this mandatory meeting that provides a forum for announcements and discussion.
