In the Pre-College Summer Institute, we recognize that what happens in the classroom is only part of the experience for students. For this reason, we have developed a host of social activities, lounge spaces, and venues for being creative or just hanging out. Additionally, some cross-disciplinary courses are offered in the evenings and are open to all students (commuters and residents).
Students are in class daily, Monday through Friday, from 9 am to either 4 or 5 pm. After class, they are free until curfew. During that free time, they can catch a bite in the UArts Cantina, make themselves a snack in their dorm kitchens, or catch a quick bite off campus at one of the many local eateries.
During their down time, students may choose to meet with friends and walk to South Street or Walnut Street shopping districts, send e-mails, surf the net from our computer labs, attend a yoga class or evening workshop, hang out in the main student lounge and play games, rent a video to watch in one of the dorm lounges, talk with their Residential Assistant, or attend the scheduled evening or weekend activity.
If a residential student is feeling a bit homesick or down, our counselors are available each afternoon and evening by appointment, and the RAs are always around to lend a comforting shoulder and an attentive ear. Read on to learn more about our student services portion of the program.
After Class
The City
University of the Arts is located in Center City Philadelphia, a downtown commercial district in close proximity to historical sites, museums, galleries, Rittenhouse Square, and South Street, all of which are within easy walking distance of the University. Field trips to cultural sites are included as part of many courses as well as in the social activities program.Social Activities
The Summer Institute provides a full range of activities every evening and each day on the weekends during the programs. All activities are open to residents and commuters alike with the exception of RA social hours. Activities include theme dances, trips to amusement parks, walking tours, films, and food and music-related events. While many activities are free to students, off-campus trips require a nominal transportation cost as well as pre-registration. Please note that trip fees are non-refundable. A complete schedule of activities with fees and a sign-up sheet will be mailed to registrants in June. An additional schedule will also be distributed to students during move-in and orientation.Student Lounges
Student lounges provide areas for students to relax and socialize with other students. The main lounge has Internet access so that students can keep in contact with friends and family throughout their stay via e-mail. Students are also able to access the Internet in University computer labs that are open daily from 10 am to 10 pm to students. The lounge also provides cable television for watching popular TV programs along with a DVD player for movie rentals. A video game system is also provided.Evening Workshops
In order to provide additional enrichment and instruction in a cross-disciplinary model, we have developed a number of courses that are offered on Thursdays and are open to all students. No pre-registration is required and all courses are free, though some may carry a materials fee or pre-purchased supplies. Students will receive a comprehensive list of all workshops at orientation. Offerings for Summer 2008 may include the following: Acting for the Screen, Alternative Photo Processes, Artist Trading Card Workshop, Dance Classes in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz, Figure Drawing, Intro to Improvisation, Pilates, and Yoga.
