Portfolio/Audition Requirements for Scholarship Applicants

Students must include samples of their work for review, as specified by each program. We require duplications of all work; no original work will be reviewed. Additionally, any audio/visual work must be submitted via CD, DVD or VHS. All digital files should be readable in Mac and PC format and must be compressed as JPEGs or PDFs. Unreadable files will not be considered for review. Please be certain to view all audio, video, or digital files before submitting to ensure that they are viewable. Additionally, students need to label all application materials with their name and the name of the program to which they are applying.

Please note: We will not return any scholarship materials; items submitted will become property of Pre-College Programs.

INDIVIDUAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Jazz
Musical Theater


Acting

Acting scholarship applicants are required to submit an audition tape of the applicant only, including the following:
– An introduction stating student’s name and which piece follows
– A one- to two-minute monologue (costume optional)
– A concluding personal statement (may include goals, dreams and aspirations)

Art + Media Exploration

Art + Media Exploration scholarship applicants are required to submit a portfolio of their work. An artist’s portfolio is an opportunity for students to present their talents, express their individuality and tell about their visual experiences. We would like to see recent work that demonstrates the student’s strength and experience in the arts. This representational portfolio should include a total of five to ten pieces. We suggest the following:
– Drawings: charcoal, collage, ink, pastel, pencil, watercolor, sketch books, storyboards
– Paintings: acrylic or oil
– Prints: etching, digital, lithography, monotypes, silk screen
– Photography: black and white, color, digital
– Graphic Design and Industrial Design: abstract forms, advertisements, posters, typography, web site graphics, product design, exhibition design
– Sculpture: metal, plaster, stone, wood
– Crafts: Ceramics, Fibers, Jewelry
– Animation Production, Film Production and Video Production: individual and/or collaborative productions (no more than three minutes in length)
– Web Site Authoring: webmaster experience, site design, site graphics Flash or Director Animations or Interactive Productions
– Book Arts, Graphic Novels, or Magazine Publishing: combining image and text
– Performance Art: incorporating elements such as objects, movement, sound and text
– Installation: site specific objects in the environment
– Writing Sample: fiction, nonfiction, creative writing or essay (no more than a total of four pages)
Please note: No original artwork will be reviewed. Work may take the form of photographs, color copies or computer printouts no larger than 8.5 x 11 inches in plastic sleeves or a CD/DVD in a protective case. Work must be numbered, clearly labeled with the student’s name and name of the piece, and accompanied by a list that outlines the title, medium, dimensions and date of completion.

DANCE

Dance scholarship applicants are required to submit an audition tape of the applicant only, dressed in black leotard and tights, to include the following:
– An introduction stating student’s name and which pieces follow
– A short ballet barre - approximately two minutes long
– A short solo - approximately two minutes long

JAZZ

Jazz scholarship applicants must submit an audition tape of the applicant only. DVDs and VHS tapes are preferred, however CDs will be considered. The recording must include the following:
– An inroduction stating student’s name and which pieces follow
– Two major scales and two minor scales (Note to percussionists: Instead of scales, demonstrate proficiency by playing in two of the following styles — Jazz, funk, rock, Cuban, or Brazilian.)
– A performance of two pieces – approximately two minutes long each; one piece should be a Jazz standard

MUSICAL THEATER

Musical Theater scholarship applicants are required to submit an audition tape of the applicant only, including the following:
– An introduction stating student’s name and which pieces follow
– A two-minute monologue
– A two-minute musical theater song
– A two-minute dance piece (optional)
– A concluding personal statement (may include goals, dreams and aspirations)
