ACTING

This studio program focuses on the fundamentals of acting. Through voice and movement exercises, centering techniques, and studio work designed to increase physical and emotional stamina, students explore their dramatic imagination and develop a sense of teamwork, discipline, responsibility, and self-confidence. The program reflects the professional orientation of the University’s undergraduate Theater program. The students will be broken into two sections of approximately 16 students for the majority of their classes with the exception of Friday mornings when the sections gather together for “Lab” time. This program is designed for the serious student actor and many courses are physically challenging. Students should have some theatrical training to participate in the program.

All students in the acting program will take the following courses:

Acting Studio

Movement

Mask Workshop

ART + MEDIA EXPLORATION

In the Art + Media Exploration program, high school students explore their individual talents and interests, learn new skills, and develop a more comprehensive portfolio. The program provides students with a visual and media arts education experience, comparable to one at the freshman college level. It is also a great opportunity for young artists to experiment with new materials and art forms as they expand their portfolios.

We offer students a choice of over 40 courses, from which they choose between two and four to create their own unique schedule and experience. Each student chooses one or two concentrations and up to two electives. Concentrations meet three or five days per week and provide students with nine to fifteen contact hours to focus on subjects that require extensive technical knowledge such as Digital Filmmaking, Photography, Design, Painting or Printmaking. Electives meet twice weekly and offer students six contact hours to test their skills in fundamentals like drawing or try something unconventional, like weaving or wearable art.

DANCE

This two-week intensive dance program is designed to provide the serious dancer with an opportunity to hone their skills and explore new techniques and styles within a university environment. The schedule is rigorous, intense, and not intended for the beginning dancer. All students are expected to be proficient in dance and experienced, with at least five years of ballet training.

Students in the Dance program will take a full day of classes, workshops, and rehearsals within the University’s nine spacious, fully equipped, and well-lit dance studios. Courses include accompaniment by professional musicians. Adjacent to the studios are lockers, dressing rooms, and lounges.

All participants are required to participate in the core program, which consists of ballet, modern and jazz dance technique. Each class meets for one hour and twenty minutes per day, four days per week. After a brief orientation on the first day of classes, all students will take a placement class led by the Dance faculty for assessment purposes. The student’s proficiency in ballet will determine their level for the program, i.e., placement in one of two core sections.  All students participate in Dance Theory/History classes and Lab classes.

The Ballet class is based on Vaganova technique. The Jazz technique includes Funk, Broadway, Commercial and Lyrical. The Modern class includes, but is not limited to Horton, Graham, and Humphrey.  Each student in the program also selects an elective from the following:

Hip Hop

Salsa

Pointe

Tap

Performance ensembles offer students the opportunity to work with faculty on choreography. Ensemble selections determine the student’s participation in the final performance on the last day of the program.  Ensemble choices include:

Ballet

Modern

Jazz

Hip Hop

JAZZ

Each summer, UArts hosts over 65 students in our intensive Jazz program, which is designed to offer the serious student musician an opportunity to perform with his or her peers in a professional University environment. Students in the two-week intensive Jazz program should be proficient in the instrument they play as well as experienced in jazz. Students will have an opportunity to play jazz music while studying under top-notch musicians and master teachers. Participation in the Jazz program is designed to improve the student musician’s knowledge of technique, musical styles, improvisation, theory, ear training, reading, and performance in a variety of jazz and contemporary music ensemble settings.

Students are accepted into the program in one of the following performance areas: bass (upright or electric), drum set, guitar, percussion, piano, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, and voice. While we recognize that many students play more than one instrument, we require that you choose only one instrument to play and study while enrolled in the program and specify that instrument on the registration form. Please note that enrollment is limited by instrument and therefore students may be waitlisted if an instrument section fills.

MUSICAL THEATER

This program is designed for serious performers interested in acquiring greater skill and expression in musical theater performance. Students take daily technique classes in music, dance, and acting, and rehearse a program of stylistically diverse repertoire that is performed at the end of the four-week program.  The program reflects the professional orientation of the University’s undergraduate Musical Theater program. After orientation, students audition for the faculty to determine their level of proficiency in all areas of instruction. They are then broken up into groups of approximately 16 students based upon their training and ability. Therefore, student schedules are varied and not actually determined until after they begin the program.

Musical Theater courses include:

Acting

Voice

Dance

Rehearsal and Performance
