Previous Degree Requirements:

The Museum Exhibition Planning and Design (MEPD) Program candidate should have previously completed a baccalaureate in industrial, graphic, interior, or architectural design and demonstrate an acceptable level of professional accomplishment through a portfolio or another appropriate means.

Alternatively, they may seek admission with a baccalaureate in a discipline related to their career direction, and take appropriate courses during their MFA program studies to develop the necessary background in design. All candidates must present a preliminary statement of career objectives and provide other academic and career information as a condition for consideration for admission to the program. We welcome students from a non-design, non-art background, and encourage them to apply.

Portfolio Requirements:

Applicants to the Master of Fine Arts in the MEPD Program are requested to submit a slide portfolio of their work, indicating their preparation and professional experience in both their areas of art or design concentration and other graphic and design skills they may wish to demonstrate. In addition, the applicant should include a sample of his/her writing skills, which may be in the form of an academic paper or a professional document (an exhibition catalog, a teaching plan, or a proposal, for example).

Applicants may substitute an alternative presentation for the slide portfolio. This presentation may include, but is not limited to, materials that demonstrate professional skills or experience in exhibition installation, research, graphic design, industrial design, interior design, design for educational purposes, architecture, theater, and fine arts, and may include original work, written or published documents, slides, photographs, and videotapes. Applicants with a non-art, non-design background should submit materials showing their strengths in the areas of their academic preparation and/or professional experience.

Material is requested so that the admissions committee may:
1) Judge the applicant's qualifications for entry into the program; and
2) Evaluate applicant's strengths and weaknesses relative to specific aspects of the program.

The applicant will be responsible for arrangements for the return of any portfolio/presentation materials submitted. If there are any questions, please contact the director of the program.

Applicants with Non-Art Backgrounds:

Applicants lacking in any art background may be required to take preliminary courses to acquire basic drawing and visualization skills during the summer preceding entry into the program.

Applicants with no training in desktop computer applications may be required to take a basic computer skills course as their elective during their first semester of the program.

International applicants from non-English speaking countries will be required to show a TOEFL score of 550 or equivalent. International credentials must be evaluated by ACEI, the Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute.

Students entering from non-art academic disciplines may be required to take supplementary courses as a prerequisite for MFA degree candidacy.
