This is a full-time practicum at a museum or museum consultancy which is intended to offer an opportunity for supervised experience in a professional setting consistent with the candidate's career objectives. Normally scheduled in the first summer after one year of residence, it is designed to provide a bridge between the first year of academic studies and the second year of focused practice and thesis development. The internship is supervised jointly by the Director of the Museum Exhibition Planning and Design (MEPD) Program and the supervising official at the host institution. The internship is intended to provide the student with a thorough understanding of the practice of exhibition design within the host institution, and is a practicum in which the experience gained in the Museum Exhibition Design Studio course is informed by application in a professional setting. |

A formal agreement with the institution is negotiated to establish the scope and obligations of each internship. Many participating museums and museum consultancies are expected to fund internships, but students may elect to participate in an unfunded internship. Students with at least six months' experience in a museum exhibition department or museum design consultancy may substitute one three-hour elective for the Internship requirement. Many museums in and outside Philadelphia are actively participating in the program through lectures in the Museum Course, sponsorship of studio projects, hosting visits, and supporting internships. |
