GD50: Overview & Schedule of Events

GD50: Overview banner

In September 2016, the UArts Graphic Design program will commemorate its 50th anniversary with a celebration titled We Are Here. Alumni, students, faculty and representatives from the global design communities will gather to honor the program's rich heritage and connections to Swiss teaching methods and design philosophies; learn about the evolution of the program; and consider the future of visual communication.

We Are Here will center on a collection of exhibitions, events and a daylong symposium that will be led by a panel of designers and scholars working on the cutting edge of design practice. The symposium will feature keynote speaker Philip Burton BFA ’68, a UArts alum who founded the design program at the University of Houston and taught and directed the graphic design program at the Yale School of Art. Burton was the executive director of the Summer Graphic Design Program in Brissago, Switzerland with Armin Hofmann and currently directs the graphic design program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The symposium concludes with a screening of Teaching to See, a highly acclaimed film that exemplifies the perceptual approach to communication featuring Professor Emerita Inge Druckrey and UArts alumni. An alumni party and celebration will follow.
