Laurence Bach is a professor at The University of the Arts in the Graphic Design department. He holds a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art (now UArts) and completed his graduate certificate in Design at the School of Design in Basel, Switzerland.
Cordelia Frances Biddle is the author of The Martha Beale Series, The Conjurer and most recently, Deception’s Daughter. Her other books include, Beneath the Wind, a historical novel exploring the dark secrets of the Gilded Age, and twelve novels in The Crossword Mystery Series, written with her husband, Steve Zettler, under the nom de plume, Nero Blanc. Cordelia has also written in the non-fiction category with her book, Caring For Your Cherished Possessions, a guide to antiques and their maintenance. Stacy Bronte began her career in Los Angeles, packaging TV movies and mini-series at the William Morris Agency. While in the Masters Program in Film at UCLA, she worked on the films The Quick and the Dead, Truman and Analyze This. She later worked in New York and Philadelphia, including projects for DG Entertainment, and was integral in securing The Wedding Planner script and developing it with the writers. She has written and produced shows for HGTV, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.
Brian Butler’s career includes design and illustration for Mattel, research and development at Tyco Toys and songwriting/recording with Columbia and Epic Records. He has taught painting, illustration, computer graphics and comic book art at numerous private studios and area colleges and universities.
David Chaplin-Loebell is Lead Software Architect for the TLA Entertainment Group, where he handles the development of web applications for e-commerce, content management and operational support. He is the primary developer of Fester, the ticketing system for the Philadelphia Film Society and is co-owner of Klatha.com, a technology consulting company. Klatha.com has created web applications for the Philadelphia Live Arts and Fringe Festivals, among others.
Bruno Circolo is a graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with a certificate in painting. He has extensive experience in computer graphics and is an art director at DSC Advertising specializing in corporate advertising. Additionally, he has taught yoga in Continuing Studies at UArts.
Eileen Cubbage is an MFA graduate of the Hoffberger School of Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art, mentored by Abstract Expressionist painter, Grace Hartigan, and New York curator, Dominique Nahas. Cubbage obtained her BFA in illustration with concentration in painting and ceramics at Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts. Eileen’s work consists of mixed media sculptures juxtaposed with meticulous silverpoint drawings and paintings. Eileen was a 2008 nominee for New Insight Art Chicago and attended the Virginia Center for Creative Arts on a full fellowship. She has exhibited her work in New York City, Philadelphia, and most recently at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Arts 2008 Vote Art! exhibit.
Amanda D’Amico is a book artist, printmaker and writer. She is organizing The Hybrid Book, an international artist’s book conference set to take place in June 2009 at The University of the Arts. In addition to exhibiting her work and writing articles, she runs the Digital Imaging Lab at UArts, working closely with Graphic Design, Printmaking and other students and faculty in inkjet, laser and offset printing processes. She holds an MFA in Book Arts/ Printmaking from UArts.
Joe DeCerchio, a graduate of the Hussian School of Art, has been in the graphic design and advertising business for 20 years. He started his career by designing logos and alphabets, and for 12 years was a self-employed art director and paper sculpture artist. He has worked on major campaigns for large and small corporations and currently is Assistant Director of Marketing, Group Creative Director for a multi-billion dollar Real Estate Investment Company.
Steve DiMeo has been an advertising copywriter and creative director in and around the Philadelphia area for over 23 years. He has worked on campaigns for Microsoft, Pizza Hut, the New Jersey Lottery, Pep Boys, p.i.n.k. Vodka, Sam’s Club and many other consumer and business-to-business accounts. Steve has won numerous regional and national advertising awards for his work. Currently, he is Copy Director at TMX Communications, an interactive marketing firm in Conshohocken, PA.
Larry Donahue’s experience includes his tenure as a mold-maker and ceramicist at the Moravian Tile Works. Teaching in our undergraduate and graduate programs as well as for Continuing Studies, Larry has been an esteemed faculty member at The University of the Arts for over 20 years. He exhibits locally and internationally and has produced work for Martha Stewart.
Amanda Elizabeth is a local artist who creates both one-of-a-kind and production jewelry. She is also a jewelry instructor at The Wayne Art Center and Main Line Art Center. In addition to studying at Penland School of Crafts and Peter’s Valley, Amanda received her BFA in Crafts from The University of the Arts.
Heather Mae Erickson is an artist, craftsperson and designer. Erickson earned her BFA in Crafts at The University of the Arts and an MFA in Ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art. In addition to numerous honors and prestigious international exhibitions, she was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to conduct independent research at The University of Arts and Design in Helsinki, Finland. Erickson is currently a Resident Artist at The Clay Studio, a lecturer at UArts and Rowan University and an instructor at several community art centers in the Philadelphia area. Her work appeared in the February 2008 Ceramics Monthly as the cover article in their issue dedicated to design.
Eileen Fell is a Philadelphia-based photographer who has exhibited in the United States and Germany. She holds an MFA in Photography and currently teaches at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
Christine Fisler graduated from The University of the Arts School of Dance with a BFA in Jazz Performance and has been trained in the Royal Academy of Dance syllabi. She has worked with the Movement Lounge Dance Company as a highlighted dancer in the Comcast Spotlight Event and has choreographed and performed in rock concerts and music videos. Christine was also Dance Captain for two years for Coyote Ugly.
John Freeborn has extensive experience as both graphic designer and university instructor in the design arts. In addition to his own personal projects, he creates advertising, multimedia and visuals for clients such as MTV, MBNA, NBC10, K2 Snowboards and AND1. John earned his BFA in Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and was Co-Founder of Space 1026, the Philadelphia community-based art gallery and studio.
Justin Freeland-Sokol, a drummer since the age of two, earned his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance and an MAT in Music Education from The University of the Arts. Originally from Kansas City, MO, Justin currently resides in Philadelphia where he is Band Director and Director of Technology at the Kensington Creative and Performing Arts High School. He also teaches music technology and drumset at UArts and continues to perform professionally as both a drummer and band leader. Justin is also Web Editor for Modern Drummer Magazine where his responsibilities include website design, development and management, as well as production of audio and video files for all of the magazine’s e-media projects.
Alex Gartelmann is a sculptor who has twice been awarded the Foundry Prize from The University of the Arts. He was also selected as the United States representative at The New and the Young II Medallic Art Symposium in Turku, Finland, where bronze casting was the focus. He has exhibited bronze works in Turku, Lisbon, Boulder, New York and locally.
Tim Gough has been working in Philadelphia as a designer/art director for various agencies and design firms for the past five years. Along the way he founded a clothing line and has worked with national and international clients. In 2007 Tim left the agency life to pursue illustration and art full time. His work has been published in magazines, newspapers and other ephemera nationwide and abroad. Tim also publishes a limited edition zine called “Cut and Paste,” and frequently shows his drawings and screen prints in various galleries and shows. Regan Gradet is an art director, graphic designer, book artist and printmaker with over 15 years of professional print design experience. She has worked in New York City, San Francisco and Philadelphia for such clients as Time Warner, Target, J. Crew, Dell and Encyclopedia Britannica. Her current work centers around computer-generated text and images as the basis for letterpress and screen printed books. Regan holds a BA in Graphic Design from The University of Maryland and an MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts.
Alexis Granwell is a Philadelphia artist who works primarily in printmaking and installation. She has shown her work throughout the United States as well as internationally. This summer she was awarded a fellowship to the Ragdale Residency in Illinois. In December, she will have a solo show at Arlington Arts Center. Granwell received an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2007 and earned a BFA in Painting from Boston University in 2003.
Brian Hibbs, a graphic and interactive designer, founded the design agency Borografis. He has received the Golden Web Award and the 2004 AAWebmasters Award and was featured in Killerbytes magazine as winner of its design competition.
Deb Hoy is an Environmental Artist exhibiting across the United States and in Europe. Her Public Art commissions include The Royal Festival Hall in London, and the London Borough of Hackney as well as Fairmount Waterworks Interpretive Center in Philadelphia. Deb holds a BFA in Sculpture from Chelsea school of Art, London and an MFA from The University of Pennsylvania. She teaches for The Joan Mitchell Foundation and The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education. She is also freelance writer for Penn Design’s Via journal and Touch Magazine.
Damon Ireland graduated from the University of Hartford’s Hartt School of Music with a Bachelor’s degree in Music and an emphasis on Music Production and Technology. He is an independent audio engineer at several local studios, which have included Stonecreek and Metropolitan Studio, as well as running his own private studio. He was formerly Music Technology Supervisor in the Music Department of The University of the Arts.
Justin Jain is an actor and teaching-artist whose pedagogy is based on ensemble-driven collective collaboration. Justin has acted professionally with several Philadelphia-based companies including: Arden Theatre Company, Azuka Theatre Collective, Enchantment Theatre Co, Hotel Obligado, Interact Theatre Company, Mum Puppet Theatre, People’s Light and Theatre Company, PlayPenn, Shakespeare in Clark Park, Theatre Horizon and The Wilma Theatre. He has also performed with The McCarter Theatre (Princeton), The Lab (San Francisco) and The Lark (NYC). He is currently a Freedom Rising company member at The National Constitution Center.
Michael A. Johnston’s recent projects include the animation of Super Mom for Comcast On Demand television (created at John Serpentelli’s Animation Stewdio) and modeling work for Harold Kalmus, Faux Real Project: Zones for the Kimmel Center. He holds a BFA in Animation from The University of the Arts.
Corinne Karon has tap danced on every continent, including Antarctica. She performs throughout this country on a regular basis for Young Audience and teaches at Rowan University, Bryn Mawr College, The Wissahickon Dance Academy and the Chester Valley Dance Academy. She holds a BFA in Modern Dance from The University of the Arts.
Brian Kremer performed and taught in New York for nearly a decade before deciding to bring his unique teaching style to his native Philadelphia. Brian has been seen in various shows across the country. As a cross-over artist, Brian’s operatic credits include Candide and The Cunning Little Vixen with the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, as well as The Magic Flute, Dialogues of the Carmelites and Dido and Aeneas. Brian is a member of the Voice faculty at the University of the Arts and works at the Manhattan School of Music as Assistant Director to the school’s American Musical Theater Ensemble. He has given lectures on Singing Diction and Acting Through Song at Temple University. He received a Bachelor’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
Laura Lewis is a jeweler and designer based in Philadelphia. After a year of living abroad, she recently exhibited her handmade jewelry, Bunnies Love Cheese, at Design Fest in Tokyo, Japan. Her freelance experience includes creating custom holiday cards that were featured in Philadelphia magazine. She holds a BFA in Jewelry, Metals and CAD-CAM from Tyler School of Art.
Ron Little is a professional calligrapher/lettering artist working in the Philadelphia area. His work ranges from traditional calligraphic citations to shop signs, as well as inscriptional lettering on walls and furniture.
Tony Miceli is a prominent jazz vibraphonist who has played nationally and internationally in countless festivals, concerts, clubs and master classes. He is a member of the faculty at The University of the Arts School of Music.
James Moore designs and creates one-of-a-kind furniture pieces and cabinetry using reclaimed lumber and unusual grades of wood. He has worked and studied with wood craftsman Michael Hurwitz at Haystack Mountain Craft School and the Michael Hurwitz Studio. Jim has been featured as an emerging artist in Art and Antiques magazine and is represented locally by the Wexler Gallery.
Beth Nicewonger Pannell earned an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from Emerson College. Currently, she is developing her Master’s thesis into a memoir book project, writing flash fiction and nonfiction and freelancing for the career website Experience.com. She is a member of the Artist Advisory Board for First Person Arts and is employed by The University of the Arts.
Len Nicholas, Performing Arts Specialist at Lenape High School in Medford, NJ, teaches wind ensemble, music technology I & II, jazz band, jazz improvisation and music theory. Len has been a guest conductor for the All South Jersey Junior High Symphonic Band as well as the All South Jersey High School Symphonic Band and Senior High Jazz Band. He was a featured presenter at the 2003 International Association for Jazz Education convention in Toronto, Canada. Len holds Bachelor degrees in Music and Music Education from The University of the Arts and a Masters degree in Applied Technology from Chestnut Hill College.
Rosae M. Reeder combines photographic processes, collage and traditional printmaking media in her book structures and installations. She holds a BFA in Printmaking and an MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts.
Dawn Reid, RYT has been exploring the world of yoga for the past seven years. Having completed a 200-hour teacher training program in Inner Fire Yoga, she is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. Dawn enjoys teaching a meditative flow class for all-levels at Green Life yoga studio in Roxborough. In addition, she teaches two sections of yoga at the University of the Arts and a lunch hour yoga class open to all UArts students, faculty and staff. Her most recent endeavor is the completion of a 95-hour prenatal teacher training program with Jade Groff.
Dan Schank is a Philadelphia-based painter working primarily with collage techniques. His work was most recently featured in Landscapism at the Armoury Gallery in Milwaukee, WI. Dan is a graduate of Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and received his MFA from the University of California in San Diego. In 2001, he attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, ME.
Peter Schaumann is a native of Pennsylvania and graduate of Philadelphia College of Art. Peter has been on the faculties of Philadelphia College of Art and Moore College of Art and Design. Following a distinguished career as a New York illustrator, where he was cited for numerous honors and awards, he turned to fine art, figure painting and portraiture. His work has appeared in many group and solo exhibitions in museums and galleries across the United States. He was the recipient of the First Award of Merit at the 1993 National Portrait Seminar in Atlanta, GA and a finalist in the 2000 International Portrait Arts Festival held in New York City. Peter is a member of the American Society of Portrait Artists.
Wendy Schuster is a PMC artist and instructor who has been enthusiastically working with PMC since first hearing about it nine years ago. She has taught beginning, advanced, and certification classes at several schools and businesses, as well as in her home studio, in Reading, PA. She is a juried artisan at the state and local levels and has 20 years of design experience in her professional life.
Nai-Whedai Sheriff, the Founder of Urban Dance & Company, has performed, choreographed and taught dance for 14 years. An early enthusiast of the Afro-Caribbean movement, her performance and teaching repertoire now includes hip hop, street funk and competitive dance. Her choreography has earned awards in the Atlantic Championships, the StarPower Competition and the Star Challenge Championship.
J. Paul Simeone is a professional photographer whose work has appeared in just about every mass medium for over 21 years. He has been nominated for Sinar Bron’s Advertising Photographer of the Year Award and is an Addy Award recipient. Prior to forming his own independent studio over 21 years ago, Paul was a Senior Photographer and Studio Manager for the Franklin Mint for eight years.
Marisha Simons is an artist-printmaker who prints on alternative media combined with encaustic painting in her installations. She has been awarded fellowships and residencies across the country and internationally, and her work has been published in National Geographic magazine. Marisha is an edition printer and shop technician for the Experimental Printmaking Institute of Lafayette College and teaches in The University of the Arts Printmaking Department.
Patricia M. Smith is a book artist and printmaker. She is a native and a resident of Philadelphia. She received her BA from Immaculata College and her MAEd from the Philadelphia College of Art. She also studied Japanese woodblock in 1979 and 1980 at the Yoshida Hanga Academy in Tokyo, Japan. She was an artist in residence at Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice Italy in 2005.
Lori Spencer leads printing and pre-press at the Borowsky Center for Publication Arts, an in-house offset production facility at The University of the Arts and teaches digital applications in the undergraduate program. She also received her MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts.
John Staack is Founder and Owner of Staack Woodworking. John has taught woodworking at Moore College of Art, Peter’s Valley Craft Center and The University of the Arts. He was also a founding partner of Ionic Woodworking Studio and launched a line of furniture at the Philadelphia Furniture Show. In addition to working for designers such as Joanne Hudson, John continues to produce his own work.
Greg van Brug is a Philadelphia-based graphic designer whose work ranges from websites for Fortune 100 companies and promotional materials for non-profits, to identities for start-up companies. Greg is also a photographer, illustrator and screen printer. He holds a BFA in Graphic Design from The University of the Arts.
Diane Walsh was a producer and development executive in Los Angeles for almost 20 years, where she developed and sold numerous feature films, cable movies, and ABC Movies of the Week. She was formerly Director of Programming at the Family Channel. She was Emmy-nominated for producing the Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation, “A Place for Annie” (ABC). Walsh is an Associate Professor in the Writing for Film and Television Department at The University of the Arts, teaches Advanced Screenwriting and is a script consultant.
Michael Wellenreiter, co-founder of Severine Pictures, is a writer/director whose feature films and music videos have been screened internationally. His latest work includes the melodrama Once Upon a Lie, music videos for Prowler and Pink Skull and the upcoming feature film Blood Fantasy. Michelle Wilson is a papermaker, printmaker and book and installation artist whose work has been featured at the Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts, the Powel House Museum’s Landmarks Contemporary Projects Series and the 2006 International Biennial for the Artist’s Book in Alexandria, Egypt. She has an MFA in Book Arts/ Printmaking from The University of the Arts.
