Think of this as Photoshop Without Fear. It’s a practical intro to the world-class, universally admired Adobe application—but without the confusion that too many details can cause. Photoshop’s tools and palettes let you manipulate (that is, enhance, modify, fix, sharpen, resize, convert, and generally save the life of) photos and other images for a wide variety of purposes. Through a series of step-by-step exercises, you’ll learn how to adjust highlights and shadows, retouch and restore, color black and-white images and line art, and more. You’ll meet the amazing lasso tool, healing brush and patch tool, and learn to use quick mask mode. By the time you leave here, you’ll have created a photomontage using resolution-setting, cropping, alignment, cutting and pasting, sizing, scaling and other transformation techniques. And you’ll have the confidence you need to delve further into Photoshop by yourself or through an advanced course.

This advanced-level course picks up where last weekend’s course left off—it assumes that your structural knowledge of web design is on par and that you’re a designer eager for more flexibility and control over web page display and behaviors. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a lifesaver you can use to determine how different elements—like headers and fonts, colors, etc.—appear, basically separating visual design from structure. JavaScript is the language that brings interaction to life in your web page. This weekend workshop is hands-on, with practical examples that will lead to more elegant and intelligent websites and saved time in styling, programming, automation and website maintenance. Exercises in XHTML, CSS and JavaScript, as well as testing and FTP-ing directly in the Dreamweaver environment.

From setting up your files to making the most of your print budget—and everything in between—this course will help you avoid everything that can go wrong as you prepare your files for press. You’ll also have a chance to visit UArts’ Borowsky Center for Publication Arts to see how files turn into finished offset-printed collateral pieces. Your own work will be output on a high-quality inkjet printer in our typo lab.
