Faculty Biographies

Laurence Bach is a professor in UArts Graphic Design department.  He holds a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art (now UArts) and completed his graduate certificate in design at the School of Design in Basel, Switzerland.

Anne Bair holds a MEd, is a reading specialist in the School District of Philadelphia and provides professional development for parents and staff.

Barbara Bassett holds a MSEd and a Certificate in Museum Education and is a curator of education at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Renee Braun is an art teacher in the School District of Philadelphia that received received the Dr. Ruth Hayre Scholarship Service Award. Braun holds a MEd with computer technology concentration and a BS in Art Education.

Emily Cajigas holds a BS in Mathematics and a MEd in Instructional Systems/Training Design and Development.  She has created innovative approaches to teaching mathematics, including infusing computer technology into the curriculum.

Bruno Circolo is a graduate of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with a certificate in Painting. He has extensive experience in computer graphics and is an art director at DSC Advertising, specializing in corporate advertising.

Susan Clarke Plumb
holds a PhD from Penn State University and has over 25 years of teaching experience in visual arts and museum studies from preschool through graduate level. Susan is currently the Director of Education Outreach and Diversity at the Michener Museum. Dr. Plumb was the founder of the Museum's Education Department in 1990. 

Chris Darway is a faculty member in the Crafts department at The University of the Arts, where he received his BFA. 

Carmella Derry holds a MEd and a BA.  With over twenty years of classroom teaching experience, she is a medal winner for Voyager Universal Reading Program and a trainer for the School District of Philadelphia.

Larry Donahue holds a MEd and is as Adjunct Associate Professor in the Crafts department at The University of the Arts. His work has been displayed nationally.

Scott Duggan holds a MEd from West Chester University.  He has taught with the Unionville Chadds Ford School District and is currently a technology instructor at Unionville Elementary School. He has worked as an adjunct professor with West Chester University teaching Introduction to Educational Technology Integration for preservice teachers.

Heather Mae Erickson, MFA, Cranbrook Academy of Art; BFA, UArts. Faculty member in UArts’ crafts department.
A ceramics designer and Fulbright Fellow, Erickson was recently featured in Ceramics Monthly Magazine. She has won first prize in the Ceramics category at the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Crafts Awards. Her work has appeared in many exhibitions and galleries.

Albert Gury holds a BA from Saint Louis University, Certificate from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and a MFA from the University of Delaware.  Chair of the Painting Department at PAFA and represented in numerous private and public collections nationally and internationally, his exhibitions include: National Academy of Design, National Capitol Washington D.C., and Philadelphia Museum of Art.  He is  represented by the F.A.N. Gallery in Philadelphia.     

Robert Hicks
, PhD, is director of Loxodrome History Consultants and has extensive experience in developing history and science educational programs and exhibits for museums and historic sites, both in the US and the UK. He has also taught graduate courses in archeology, training theory, and anthropology at the University of Maryland and George Mason University.

David Howey, Associate Professor at UArts, was an actor in England for 30 years working with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre Company, in London’s West End, and in TV series and films. He has appeared on Broadway and performed Shakespeare across the United States, and has performed with the Arden Theater Company, InterAct Theater Company, Walnut Street Theater, Bristol Riverside Theater, 1812 productions, and the Wilma Theater. Howey frequently directs productions for the Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival and UArts.

Carol Kane, MEd, Award and multiple grant winning technology coordinator and curriculum designer for the Philadelphia School system. Her courses have been instrumental in attracting area women into technological careers.

Robert Karl
is currently an Educational Technologist for the School District of Philadelphia, responsible for professional development programs in technology. He has taught computer science at the elementary and middle school levels and has received his M.Ed. in Educational Psychology, as well as his Principal's Certification.

Alec Karros
, MFA, Rhode Island School of Design, BFA, Philadelphia College of Art (now UArts). He is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Crafts department at UArts and has exhbited nationally.

Kenneth Kay, MSEd, received his M.S in Instructional Technology from Rosemont College. He is currently an instructor at Philadelphia University's Multimedia and Design department and the University of Pennsylvania's Literacy Network.


Marlene Kessler
completed her graduate study at Temple University with a Masters in Foundations of Education and a Masters in Elementary/Secondary School Counseling.  She taught in the Philadelphia School System, was an elementary guidance counselor, and has written a curriculum guide for school counselors.   

Barbara Korb earned an MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from UArts and an MBA from Philadelphia University. Her creative work evolves from mathematics and incorporates text, patterns, and found objects. She is a professor at Bucks County Community College.

Anthony J. Latess received his BA in Art Education and his MEd from Edinboro University. He is currently a teacher of preschool children with disabilities in Washington Township NJ and has developed a program utilizing computer technology for educators in the field of Special Education.

Lorraine Le Storti holds a BFA from Moore College of Art and a Certificate in Creative Studies from SUNY. She is a partner in Ideatects, Inc., a company that specializes in marketing and graphic design.  Its clientele includes Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, Cooper Hospital, Genuardi Family Foundation, and Gwynedd-Mercy College.

Sandra L. McClurken received her BA and MBA from Temple University and an MS in Instructional Systems from Philadelphia University. She is certified as an Instructional Technology Specialist with the State of Pennsylvania and is currently employed as an Educational Technologist with the School District of Philadelphia. She has also taught for Philadelphia University and at Saint Joseph's University.

Adrienne Neszmelyi-Romano is the Curator of Education at the James A. Michener Art Museum. She is involved in programs for K-12 students and teacher training.  She is also a practicing and exhibiting jewelry and metalsmithing artist.  Adrienne has an arts education certification from Moore College of Art and Design and a Masters in Art Education from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia.

Mary Elizabeth Nelson, lettering and book artist, has over 20 years of fine art studies throughout the US and China.  Her work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution.  She was the past president of the Philadelphia Calligraphers’ Society.

Brad O’ Donnell holds a MA in Environmental Education and a BS in Elementary Education.  A PA teacher of the year semi-finalist with over ten years of classroom teaching, he has served as a peer mediation coordinator and has presented many programs on integrating technology in teaching.

Thomas Palumbo holds an MEd, is an educator, author of award-winning activity books on children’s literature, and appears in Who’s Who in American Teachers.  He has been a classroom teacher, mathematics collaborator, and an instructional advisor for special education where he designed programs for students, parents, and teachers.

Donna Popp holds a MEd and BS from West Chester University.  She is a member of the Society of Urban Scholars, PA Department of Higher Education, and National Council Teachers of Mathematics and has over 30 years of classroom teaching.

Ellen Priest is a painter whose work is based on jazz.  After developing her images and method in private for many years, she began showing again in 1999 and received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2001.  She has taught art in private and public schools and wrote an at-home studio art program for elementary-age students titled Eyeball It!  Priest holds a Master of Divinity from Yale University and a BA from Lawrence University.      

Rosae M. Reeder received her MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from UArts. Her work combines various photographic processes and traditional printmaking in combination with book structure and installation. Her work has been exhibited nationally.      

Judith Robison received her MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from UArts and is currently a Book Artist in Residence at the Rosenbach Museum and Library.  Her background includes book conservation with the American Philosophical Society, the Indiana University Library, and the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in addition to her own teaching and writing.                                                                                  

Susan Rodriguez holds a BFA and MEd, is an exhibiting artist and an art educator. She holds an honorary doctoral degree from Moore College of Art. She teaches in the Art Education department at UArts and is the author of The Special Artist’s Handbook: Art Activities and Art Smart slides and art activities for teaching art history.

Douglas Rosentrater holds a BA from the University of South Florida, MA from Northwestern University, and an ABD from the University of Hawaii-Manoa.  He is a full Professor of Communications at Bucks County Community College and chairperson of its Communications department. He is a Commonwealth Speaker for the PA Humanities Council and served as President of the Theatre Association of PA.

Michael Rossman holds a BID and a MFA.  He is a professor in the College of Art and Design at The University of the Arts and the recipient of the Bietzel Award for Distinguished Teaching and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.

Kristen Senker holds a MS in Library Science and a BS in Elementary Education. She is a literature, library, and media specialist in the Central Bucks School District. She specializes in young adult literature and educational technology.

Debby Pearl-Souders holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a MFA from Towson State University.  She is an instructor at Maryland Institute College of Art, has shown in solo exhibitions in Baltimore and Washington, DC, and national juried exhibitions.

Lori Spencer is a faculty member at The University of the Arts and holds a MFA in BookArts/Printmaking.

Christine Stoughton holds a MEd in special education, a PhD in Counseling Psychology, and a Certificate in Sculpture and Printmaking from Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.  She has exhibited throughout the region and has taught at numerous studios.

Joseph Sweeney holds a BFA from Philadelphia College of Art (now UArts) and a MA in Art and Architecture from Penn State University.  A renown landscape painter, he has taught classes at UArts, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Wayne Art Center.  He has shown with Gross McCleaf Gallery and has received the Catherine Gibbons Granger Award from the Fellowship of PAFA.

Louis Tenaglia holds a PhD and MEd from Penn State University and a Superintendent Letter of Eligibility from Arcadia University.  Lou spent 13 years teaching in public schools and 18 years as a public school principal.  Lou works as a private consultant in the area of transformational education and teaches meditation.

Patricia Wertman teaches at the Beverly Hills Middle School and the Delaware County Intermediate Unit and is a RN and holds a MS. 

William Ziegler holds a MSEd in Special Education from Trenton State College.  He has been an assistive technology specialist at Bucks County Intermediate Unit for 25 years and was an instructor in the Instructional Technology program at Philadelphia University for Hypercard and interactive media.
