Sophomore Photography: Recent Work
Junior Photography: Pin-Up Show

Reception: Friday, May 5, 4 - 5 p.m.

This annual student exhibition features recent work from sophomore students in the Photography program at the University of the Arts. The Photography program has a variety of courses in the sophomore year that stress a wide range of photographic expression. Basic camera handling, advanced black and white darkroom techniques, color-printing materials, alternative process, and training in digital photography are all included in the sophomore curriculum. This exhibition is wide ranging in subject matter, various photographic techniques and aesthetic concerns.

In conjunction with the sophomore show, the junior Photography class will be exhibiting work in the hallways surrounding the Sol Mednick Gallery. The junior curriculum is based on mastery of studio techniques, on-location shooting and editorial photography, photo journalistic techniques, and refining one's photographic vision.

The UArts Photography program is the largest in Philadelphia and has produced such esteemed alumni as Irving Penn, George Krause, Maria Martinez Cañas, David Lebe, Jayne Wexler, Dominic Episcopo, MacArthur Fellow Deborah Willis, gallerist Catherine Edelman and photo editor Susan Welchman, among others.

Immediately following the opening reception will be the reception for the Senior Photography Show, Sonder, from 5 to 7 p.m. as part of Philadelphia's First Friday events. The senior Photography show is on view in Dorrance Hamilton Hall, 320 S. Broad St., April 25 through May 11, 2017. Gallery hours for Hamilton Hall are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Members of the media and public are invited to the group exhibition, which display the photographic works of 24 graduating seniors.

Now in its 38th year, the Sol Mednick Gallery offers a year-round regular schedule of exhibitions of contemporary photography. The only endowed gallery in Philadelphia dedicated solely to the exhibition of photography, the Mednick Gallery earned the Photo Review Award for service to photography. Associate Professor and former Director of the Photography program Harris Fogel, who founded Gallery 1401 in 1999, has been director/curator of both galleries since 1997. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday by appointment. Call 215-717-6300 for more information. Digital images are available upon request.
