The Art of Polly Becker

Richard C. von Hess Illustration Gallery

The Illustration program's Richard C. von Hess Gallery is dedicated to featuring nationally and internationally recognized professional illustrators, including Boston-based artist Polly Becker.

Becker gathers together what others might discard because of their broken joints, chipping paint or worn sheen. She uses a fascinating, ever-growing collection of scrap materials to make totally new, beautiful objects. It is this aspect of her work that serves as a reminder that not everything needs to be thrown out, and it is often the imperfections, chips, breaks and scrapes that give them their character. Her quietly arresting assemblages have illustrated articles in Rolling Stone, Harper’s, The New York Times and many others.
