Second Chances: Daniel Gerwin
Feb 1—Mar 30 2014
Abington Art Center, Kellner Gallery
"Solo Series" exhibition by Fine Arts Senior Lecturer Daniel Gerwin.
Gerwin utilizes trompe l’oeil painting techniques to simulate wood grain, alluding to floors, doors, window frames and furniture. “Homes become extensions of our bodies. We grasp knobs and pull drawers as easily as our hands find our mouth; we make our way in the dark from room to room. What is the difference between opening a door for the first time and opening our bedroom door ten thousand times?” He does not seek to illustrate or directly describe these involvements, but rather to abstract them. In his work, trompe l’oeil folds in on itself to become a language of imagination and psychological resonance. His approach to painting has a syntax that breaks free of his original subject, allowing himself to explore a continually expanding content.
Opening: February 2, 3 – 5 p.m.
