Foundation
Foundation in the College of Art, Media and Design
The first-year experience provides all Art and Design students with a set of powerful abilities in visual perception, expression, and image- and object-making. Students take 33 credits of Foundation courses.
*See note below about first-year-program changes taking effect in Fall 2012.
Broad Coursework
Coursework includes two- and three-dimensional design, drawing, and time-based art forms such as animation. Students shoot and edit video, model and cast, and construct works in metal and wood.
A Time for Discovery
You'll explore your personal talents and experience each of the art and design disciplines. A comprehensive array of freshman electives representative of all of the disciplines in art and design complement the Foundation courses.
*IMPORTANT NOTE for new students entering the College of Art, Media and Design in Fall 2012: entering students will take the new Core Studies program of the College of Art, Media and Design. The Core program will train students in essential skills of making, critical thinking and writing, and will expose students to practices and debates across the Visual Arts disciplines. Students will also be able to focus from their first semester in their likely area of study through Core courses specific to the three schools of Art, Film and Design. In subsequent semesters, the Core program provides increasing flexibility and opportunity, with more choice of classes in many fields and subject areas so that students can chart their own course toward the selection of a specific degree program.
