Summer Institute : Music : Faculty

Students in the Jazz + Contemporary Music program work with professional musicians. The majority of our faculty teach in the degree programs at UArts. Our expert instructors are seasoned educators and dedicated artists who enjoy the opportunity to share their expertise and collaborate with the next generation of musicians.

Marc Dicciani
Dean, College of Performing Arts
Marc Dicciani is a professor of Drumset and Music Business. He tours and plays drums internationally, conducts clinics for Yamaha Drums and others, and writes for Modern Drummer magazine. Visit him at




Micah Jones
Music Coordinator
As an assistant professor in Music at UArts, Micah Jones is also the chair of the Bass department. He has a BM from Temple University and a MM from the University of the Arts. He performs regularly in Philadelphia and surrounding areas. 



Chris Farr
Music Coordinator
Saxophonist Chris Farr graduated from University of the Arts in 1995 and since then has been a highly sought after performer and educator. Chris is currently the head of the saxophone department at the University of the Arts. Chris is also a clinician and endorser of Eastman saxophones. Over the past 15 years has performed, toured and recorded with the likes of Elvis Costello, Jill Scott, Sting, John Legend, Mary J. Blige, The Roots, Teddy Pendergrass, Grover Washington, Gerald Veasley & Maynard Ferguson.

Matt Gallagher
Trumpet Instructor
Matt Gallagher earned his undergraduatedegree in Music Education from West Chester University in 1997 and earned a Master ofMusic degree in Jazz Studies from the University of the Arts in 2001. Matt is currently the principal trumpet player for The Philly Pops and has been a featured lead trumpet player with The Philadelphia Orchestra. In addition, Matt is a studio lead trumpet player at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, NJ, and has recorded for Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, R. Kelly, Jennifer Hudson, and LL Cool J. In 2010, Matt formed The Philly Big Band where he is featured as both a soloist and lead trumpet player. Matt is the chair of the trumpet department, “Z” Big Band director, and music education professor at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA.

Randy Kapralick
Trombone Instructor
Randy received his Bachelor’s in Studio Music & Jazz Performance from the University of Miami School of Music. Randy toured the United States for 5 years playing with the Four Tops, the Temptations, the Spinners, Aretha Franklin, Frankie Valli, KC & The Sunshine Band and Mary Wilson. In Philadelphia, Randy can currently be seen playing with a variety of exciting ensembles including The Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia, The Larry McKenna Jazz Orchestra, and Norman David & The Eleventet. Randy is the Coordinator of Ensembles and Chair of the Trombone Department at University of the Arts where he also teaches Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Theory, and Musicianship. He directs two big bands at the University of the Arts: the Rick Kerber Tribute Ensemble and the prestigious Uarts High School All-Star Jazz Ensemble.
