Piano Department Faculty
The Piano program at the University of the Arts attracts students from around the world and has become a premier destination for young pianists seeking a clear, comprehensive and highly developed program for the study of jazz improvisation.
Undergraduate and graduate programs in Jazz Studies offer pianists many opportunities to develop instrumental skill and explore improvisational possibilities through extensive ensemble experience and intensive private study.
Our faculty consists of top professional pianists who represent a wide range of stylistic expertise. This includes classical, Afro-Cuban, swing, bebop, post-bop, fusion, free jazz and various contemporary styles. In addition to our regular faculty, many of today’s leading pianists are invited to present master classes. Past guest performers and lecturers have included Kenny Barron, McCoy Tyner, Kenny Werner, Danilo Perez, Helen Sung, Uri Caine, Mike Garson, Jeff Gardner, Eric Lewis, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Marc Copland and Jim McNeely.

"At UArts you are surrounded by phenomenal teachers, and each has something different and unique to offer. After each private lesson I come away feeling like I've progressed another step; I watch my playing grow in ways I couldn't imagine. UArts also has some incredible students and there are always opportunities to collaborate with other musicians."

"Within my first few weeks of study at UArts, I could see drastic improvements in my playing. I find that about every week I can do something on the piano that I couldn’t do the week before! The environment is nurturing, yet challenging. UArts has given me many opportunities to perform. Two of my ensembles played in Italy and Japan during my freshman year. It’s a privilege to go to school every day in a place where I am surrounded and inspired by creative people. I feel encouraged to do my best, absorb as much as I can and use that knowledge to develop my own style."

"In one year at UArts I have noticed a huge difference in my playing and am looking forward to the rest of my time here. There is a multitude of playing opportunities, plenty of ensembles and chances to play with students and professional musicians … as well as department workshops and private lessons with accomplished faculty members."

"Being part of the piano department is amazing. The greatest thing has been overcoming limitations at the instrument. My relationship with the piano is at a whole different level now and I look forward to surpassing this level. My experiences here lead to the joy I feel knowing that I have a chance to be successful in the music field."
