The Masters program in Jazz Studies began in 1997. Designed for a small group of highly motivated, dedicated students, the program has already made a significant impact in the jazz world. Besides holding teaching positions at major universities, our graduates have been regular contributors to such jazz publications as Jazz Improv, Down Beat, Modern Drummer, Acoustic Guitar, and JAZZed. As players, they have performed with many top professionals, including Pat Martino, Ernie Watts, Terence Blanchard, Maynard Ferguson, Marcus Belgrave, and many others.
Our curriculum is focused on helping students pursue individual goals and on providing many options for careers in music. In addition to developing as improvisers and instrumentalists, students are encouraged to engage in research, writing, analysis, current technology, and the development of pedagogical skills that will greatly increase their options for success upon graduation.
In addition to our own outstanding faculty, students are also regularly able to interact with guest lecturers and performers. Recent guests have included Uri Caine, Pat Martino, Kenny Barron, Benny Golson, Lewis Porter, Jimmy Heath, Phil Schaap, Lou Donaldson, Christian McBride, Slide Hampton, and many more.
